Google has made an exciting investment in alternative energy for its future. Buying up tons of windpower, Google has set the bar for other environmentally conscious companies. They have also made a handful of other interesting and innovative investments in the future of energy.
Google signed a 20-year contract with a wind farm in Iowa. The farm will begin to supply Google with power beginning on July 31st for an undisclosed price rate. The energy will not be able to power all of the company's operations, but will be able to sustain several of their data centers in California. Actually, the energy produced by the windmills in Iowa will not go to Google. It will be sold into Iowa's regional grid, making this deal an energy offset. Google says it has plans to expand its investment in sustainable energy as the company itself expands. Eventually, they aim to be carbon neutral.
Google has also:
- Spent $10 million to investigate and harness geothermal energy, or the heat that comes from the center of the Earth.
- Purchased a fleet of electric cars to promote them and educate people on how well they perform.
What can you do?
Do your part to conserve energy. Give up buying stuff made from petroleum for a Weekend Without Oil. You can work at home to make sure your heating and cooling necessities are minimal. Petition your school to do the same.
