Groovy Goodies Help Girls Abroad

Cupcakes

When Do Something Award Winner Maggie Doyne started the Kopila Valley Children's school in Nepal, she probably didn't anticipate that she would be partially funded by America's sweettooth.

Yet that's what happened when Lindsay Brown, a junior at the University of Notre Dame, held a tie-dye cupcake fundraiser at her school. Lindsay raised $900 and used that money to sponsor three girls at Maggie's school.

Because of Lindsay’s innovative idea, She’s the First, an organization that promotes girls' education in the developing world, is utilizing the tie-dye cupcake sale as their funraiser. The non-profit organization is adding some tie-dye to their recipe by holding The Tie-Dye Cupcake Bake-Off in the first week of November. Any high school or college can participate, and proceeds will help educate girls worldwide.

As for Lindsay—her university awarded her a grant to travel to Nepal and meet the young girls she sponsored. While there, she created an all-girls soccer team to promote self-confidence, leadership and assertiveness among these young girls.
