House Dems unveil new health care bill

House Democrats disclosed a 2,000 page health care bill today, in another attempt to propose an overhaul of the current health care system in America.

This most recent bill is a combination of three versions passed by different sub committees of the House of Representatives. It would cost $894 billion over 10 years and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said today that it will cover 36 million Americans who do not have health insurance currently.

Pelosi added that the bill will extend coverage so that 96% of Americans will be covered under the proposed plan, which includes a “public option.” The public option has been a source of much debate in the battle for health care reform and under the House plan, health care providers (doctors) would negotiate reimbursement plans directly with the government. The public option would be a government-run insurance plan, for those who are not covered by their employers.

The House bill is different than the health care reform bill recently passed by the Senate Finance Committee in some crucial ways. Under the Senate’s bill, does not include the same tax on the wealthy to pay for the plan, but would instead tax high-end health care policies often purchased by wealthy Americans.

In order for health care reform to be signed into law, the bills passed by the House and the Senate will have to be merged, and both chambers will have to pass a revised bill. The bill will then finally be sent to Obama to be signed into law.

Many expect the road to a health care reform law to be long, but today’s new bill in the house suggests continuing debate and potentially progress. What do you think of the House Democrats’ bill? What about the public option? Let us know!!
