Hunger in the U.S. hits record high

This winter, more Americans than ever are expected to go hungry, based on a recent trend reported by the US Department of Agriculture.

This year, the amount of families struggling to put food on the table soared to an all time high since the Department of Agriculture began monitoring food insecurity 14 years ago.

13 million more Americans joined the ranks of people classified as food insecure; a number even larger than the most grim projections of increasing hunger in the country during the current economic recession.

As people across the country are facing job losses and pay cuts, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack called the new numbers yet another “wake-up call for the country.”

According to the new report, released earlier this week, in 506,000 households, children confront “very low food security.” This number has soared from 323,000 the year before.

President Obama commented on the report, as many are reminding him of his promise to end childhood hunger by 2015 and called these stats “particularly troubling.”

Luckily, you can take action to end this troubling trend. Take a small step to help us collect a million pounds of food, and help millions of Americans get through the holiday season with full bellies.

Poverty is a curse. The main cause of poverty is unemployment. Govt. should create jobs for the needy.

Poverty is something that has been pushed to the sidelines for decades. It is not time to act. In 2009 there has been more job loss than every recorded in U.S. history. This means that people cannot pay for bills, let alone food. The job loss is directly connected to poverty. Something urgent needs to be done. The first step is for fellow citizens to volunteer at soup kitchens, food drives, or ringing bells. Now is the time to act. Help out the needy in any way you can. Congress needs to see poverty as the issue that it is. Jobs need to be created so that this issue is eradicated.
