In response to the massive earthquake and devastating resulting tsunami that hit Japan earlier today, we at DoSomething.org are appealing to young people throughout the world to share their love and support for the Japanese people with “Paper Cranes for Japan.”
The task is simple:
- Find and upload a photo of an origami paper crane
- Make your own and take a quick pic of it
- Upload that photo along with a message of support to the Facebook page “Paper Cranes for Japan.”
- UPDATE Now you can mail your paper cranes to Students Rebuild to trigger $2 for each crane. The goal? 100,000 cranes received will raise $200,000 to support Architecture for Humanity’s plan to support the rebuilding efforts of Japanese architects. Click here for more details.

This is a project for youth, and most probably don't have a lot of money to send. Some still might. If we can't, at the very least we can offer some hope. I personally love this.
The action of folding one thousand cranes has been a very old tradition in Japan. I understand that some people feel as if something else could be done at the same time, but I don't believe that Japan will find these cranes as "insulting" in any way...It is a tradition to make one thousand cranes when praying for others to recover or get better. Of course, I am not in any way discouraging the idea of donating money. This is also very, if not one of the best ways to contribute and help Japan, and any piece of contribution is very important. However, making paper cranes is also another way of representing thoughts and prayers.
I think this project is very neat.
Look up 1000 cranes and you will see how much this means to the people of Japan. Think of something dear to yourself and how touching it would be if people all around the globe brought this very thing up in your honor.
I am going to do this along with donating all I can afford to assist the people in Japan. Money helps build a roof over their heads, warms the hands and feet, puts food in their stomachs, the paper cranes will warm their hearts and souls.

Hmmm...I just posted this but apparently it disappeared in cyberspace, so I'll try again. The idea of the cranes is lovely, and indeed cranes figure as important symbols in Japan. But take it a step farther. Describe the wish, intent, or prayer represented by each crane, and allow all of us on facebook to pledge to a charity on behalf of the that crane and the sentiment it contains. That way you have nothing to do but post some links to the best charities, and viewers can select one or more for the purpose of fulfilling their pledges with whatever amount is comfortable.
Making cranes for those in Japan is no different from masses that gather to hold a candlelight vigil. I like Holly's idea of writing an intent or prayer along with posting the picture of your crane on Facebook. If you intersts are to donate money there are many charitable organizations that are asking for your contribution. Dosomething.org is encouraging younger generations to personalize this event and take action where monetary action is not an option. The parents of a five or twelve year old can donate but the child may not be able to. Involving a child, who can't yet conceptulaize or understand the damage or devastation, in an action that symbolizes hope shouldn't be looked down upon.

This sounds like a good idea, i wanted to know what do we do with all the Cranes. i know you guys want to get at least 100,000 but do you want 100,000 pictures or do you want actual cranes? i would love to help you guys with both tasks. I have an idea for the 100,000 cranes. since we don't want to waste perfectly good paper we can gather paper from around the house. We can use news paper, magazine and any extra paper you have that you don't need anymore. Since there are so many people willing to do this i figure why only 100,000 cranes why not more? We can take it further. I believe we can do this. WHOSE WITH ME??
