Tons of celebrity athletes gone good donate to big charities, but few have been as creatively cause-rocking as LA Laker Ron Artest—oops, we mean Mr. World Peace. That's right. If Artest's wish to change his name to Metta (which is a Buddhist term for "kindness") World Peace, Laker fans will find themselves cheering for peace.
Artest was known as a bad boy for years until recently when he devoted himself to turning his life around. Apparently his efforts worked as he earned NBA's J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award for community service two months ago. Artest's latest gesture of causey commitment shows how seriously he's taking his role as a do-gooder.
We can't wait to see fans holding signs that read, "WORLD PEACE, YOU'RE MY #1!!"
Other famous name-changing athletes include fellow Laker Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who changed his name after adopting the Muslim faith ("Abdul" means "servant of," "Jabbar" is the Creator.) Also, Miami Dolphins running back who was once known as Sharmon Shah changed his name to...Karim Abdul-Jabbar. In addition to taking on the same name, the two athletes were both UCLA graduates and both number 33 on their teams. They've also never met.
