National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week

The week of November 15th is National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week. Organizations across the country have scheduled events across the country to bring greater understanding of the challenges that homeless individuals, families and children face daily.

How bad is the homelessness problem in the United States?

  • The National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty states that approximately 3.5 million people, 1.35 million of them children, are likely to experience homelessness in a given year.
  • 23% of the homeless population are veterans (that’s between 529,000 and 849,000 vets).
  • 33% of male homeless population are veterans
  • 1 out of every 3 homeless people are under the age of 18.
  • 1.6 to 1.7 million people under 18 will experience homelessness each year.
