Rebel army finds safe haven in Darfur

News out of Darfur, Sudan this week has experts worried that Uganda’s Lord’s Resistance Army has found shelter in the neighboring country Sudan. The LRA has been in northern Uganda since the 1980s, contributing to Africa’s longest running civil war, and is responsible for recruiting hundreds of thousands of Ugandan children as child soldiers and sex slaves.

Organizations on the ground in the region, including the Enough Project and Invisible Children, are particularly concerned that a new collaboration between Joseph Kony, the LRA leader, and Sudanese president, Omar al-Bashir may develop. Both men are wanted for crimes against humanity and war crimes by the International Criminal Court. In the past, the LRA has received material support from the Sudanese government, and in 2005 Joseph Kony announced that al-Bashir supported the LRA in Sudan as a force to help destabilize south Sudan, a region that has been at odds with the Sudanese government.

You can help stop the LRA before the situation escalates by urging your Senators and Congressmen to pass the LRA disarmament and Northern Uganda Recovery act.

You can also call the State Department at 202-647-4000 and tell them you want stopping the LRA to be a priority.
