Review: If You Really Knew Me

Last week the Do Something team was taking an overnight flight after the Do Something Awards. Unable to sleep, some of us turned on the TV expecting to be bored by summer programming.

Nothing could’ve prepared us for If You Really Knew Me, the new MTV show where the organization Challenge Day hosts workshops in high schools to solve problems like racism, cyberbullying, and general intolerance.

While people were sleeping next to us on the plane, we were tyring to hold in gasps and tears as we watched teens reach a catharsis and connect with their peers.

What it’s about

Each week, the show follows a different high school’s journey through a “Challenge Day.” Workshop leaders push students to confront their very REAL issues, like coming face to face and talking with a peer who bullied them online.

Your favorite part will be…

When students realize that others have had the same problem. For instance, in the first episode students labeled as student council kids, band-geeks, and outcasts all admitted that they’ve struggled with suicide.

Is there a cause?

So many causes! In just the first two episodes we’ve seen people address:

  • Cyber bullying
  • Gay and Lesbian discrimination
  • Racism on sports teams
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Violence and Anger Management

What can you do?

Promote similar discussions in your own school and community. Break the barriers!
