As the nation gears up to watch the Indianapolis Colts and the New Orleans Saints go head to head in Sunday’s Super Bowl, DoSomething.org is putting the teams on another field: the philanthropy field. We’re rating the teams on how they add up when it comes to charity and giving back to their communities. Afterall, football is a huge money making industry so they should be giving back, right?
Are the Saints saintly?
With two active youth programs and eight major foundations by individual players and coaches, the Saints kick things off with pretty impressive line-up.
- Junior Training Camp: The Saints teamed up with Gatorade to give kids access to professional training camps. The camps visit different elementary and junior high schools throughout the Gulf Coast letting kids experience the same drills and use the same equipment as the actual Saint players. The kids also get lessons on education and goal setting. The players say the purpose is to get more children active in the game of football while influencing them to be better people in the game of life.
- The Brees Dream Foundation: Star player Drew Bree, formed the Brees Dream Foundation to support cancer research and promote youth education and progress in New Orleans. Since its start in 2003, Brees has made over $4,500,000 for charitable causes through annual events such as:
- Brees on the Seas, where cancer stricken kids are treated to a day of fishing
- Rebuilding Through Brotherhood gets members of Sigma Chi fraternity together to rebuild homes in the community.
Can the Colts compare?
The Colts boast a whopping 15 charitable programs in their repertoire! And that doesn’t even include their 2 award programs and 5 individual player foundations.
- Colts Celebrity Showdown: This annual fundraiser raises money for education, helping community centers and schools enhance learning environments by providing tools like interactive whiteboards. At the fundraiser, fans are able to mingle with the stars through live auctions and games.
- PeyBack Foundation: Peyton Manning created PeyBack in 1999 to provide underprivileged youth with programs that encourage youth in leadership and growth opportunities.
- PeyBack Classic gives high school football teams the dream-fulfilling chance to play in a professional stadium.
- PeyBack Bowl is an annual bowling fundraiser.
- PeyBack Holiday Celebration hosts numerous events during the holiday season for children and their families.
Considering their line-up of philanthropic efforts, both teams deserve a large dose of props for their slew of philanthropic programs. No matter who’s victorious this upcoming weekend, DoSomething.org is officially declaring them winners where it really counts.
