WFP pulls aid from Somalia due to violence

Yesterday the World Food Program announced a partial suspension in their food distribution efforts in southern Somalia due to threats and attacks from militant groups in the region.

The result? They estimate more than 1 million people in that area will go hungry. The agency released a statement saying they are “deeply concerned about rising hunger and suffering among the most vulnerable due to these unprecedented and inhumane attacks on purely humanitarian operations.”

Recently, Islamic militants told the WFP to either stop sending aid to the country or to solely buy food from Somali farmers. Although the agency is still able to reach more than 60% of those in need, or 1.8 million people, the United Nations and WFP are increasingly concerned about growing violence and threats, and four WFP staff members have been killed in Somali between August 2008 and January 2009.

While you might not be able to do much about violent extremism around the world, you can still help end hunger around the world today.

Comments

We have seen this sort of extremism many times throughout history. The violent oppression of a group of people, systematically starving them, GENOCIDE. When after the holocaust the world promised 'Never again' After Rwanda, the world ashamed promised 'Never Again'. Yet we still allow the genocides in the Sudan, and Somalia to continue. We allow girls to be raped repeatedly as a weapon of war. We allow children to be murdered or let them become child soldiers. They are starving, they are not receiving education. Education is the only way to achieve peace and decrease poverty.
There is no morality in profit! What can we do to help these people. I will do anything!
