Texting making kids fat?

What do you hear when you walk around your neighborhood? Where did all the squealing kids go? Apparently, they’re inside playing video games and surfing the net. Experts say this is contributing to a generation less active, overweight kids that are headed to a life of heart disease.

Childhood obesity experts say more American young people are becoming obese because so many are addicted to television, video games, texting and fast food.

Food fight = crime?

It started when an apple was tossed and ended with 25 students, ages 11 to 15, in jail. Now parents are questioning how an age-old adolescent prank became criminalized, and how these kids will be scarred for life by their arrests.

The food fight happened last Thursday in a Chicago school lunchroom. Within minutes, dozens of middle-school students joined in the ruckus. The 25 who were arrested were charged with reckless conduct, a misdemeanor, and were released to their parents, some after hours of being in a jail cell.

American hikers to face espionage charges

In July, three American backpackers were detained in Iran and charged with illegally crossing the boarder from Iraq. On Monday, a Tehran prosecutor announced that the three are being charged with spying.

The announcement of the charges comes only days after U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met privately with the families of Shane Bauer, Sarah Shourd and Josh Fattal, who family say crossed the border by mistake. Their family and friends say it was an innocent mistake.

Hurricane Ida heads for U.S.

Downgraded to a tropical storm on Monday morning, Ida is expected to come ashore within the next 24 hours.

Despite the downgrade, officials are warning resident of the Gulf Coast not to take the storm lightly. Ida is expected to dump up to eight inches of rain in some parts of the affected area. The hurricane center also warned of "large and destructive waves" caused by the storm.

"A dangerous storm surge will raise water levels by as much as 4 to 6 feet above ground level along the coast near and to the east of where the center makes landfall," the center said.
