Threats close schools

School Violence

Schools across Illinois, including two colleges and several elementary schools, were closed for the day on April 14th because of threatening messages. St. Xavier University in Chicago closed Friday, April 11th, after menacing messages were found in a dormitory, claiming students will die on April 14th. Malcolm X College on Chicago's West Side was evacuated early Monday (April 14th) after a written threat was found on campus. In the meantime, Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan is also closed Monday, April 14th, due to threats of violence specific to Monday's date.

Campuses around the nation have been on alert since a Feb. 14 shooting in which a gunman burst into a lecture hall at Northern Illinois University, killing five students and wounding 18 others before turning the gun on himself.

What do you think is contributing to the recent rash of violence on campuses across the country? And what do you think should be done? Some have proposed allowing students to carry guns. Is this the solution?

Guns Are Tools

In the majority of states, people may obtain a permit to carry concealed weapons after taking training and submitting to a criminal background check. If one or two of these people had been in the classroom that day at Virginia Tech, there would have been a chance they could stop the shooter. Instead, thirty people were killed, people who could only huddle under their desks and wait to die. In those cases where school massacres were halted, it was because someone, a vice-principal, other students, an off-duty cop, a woman attending church with her licensed gun, someone with a gun was there to stop the killer.

My mother used to tell me that "violence never solved anything." If that were true, armies wouldn't exist, police wouldn't carry weapons, and gang violence in inner cities would be non-existent. The simple truth is that violence, or the ability to utilize violence in the form of self defense, does indeed solve problems. And the credible threat of the likelihood of successful self defense is what keeps the peace, on campus and across the world.

not the solution?

My brother attends Northern illinois university. He was in the computer lab near that lecture hall when the shooting happened. A man ran in and told them all to get down. But the scary thing is, My brother was in that lecture hall just ONE HOUR before the shooting. ONE HOUR! Imagine if he would have been in there during the shooting. I just pray to god everday and thank him for my brothers safety. I for one think that they should allow certain students to carry guns. Students with good grades and are known for good tempers. However if they let every student get a hold of a gun it could lead to chaos. I know what im talking about although i am young. Give the right kids guns and it will protect our nations young adults and children.

we need to be nicer to people.

if we wouldnt give attention to all those guys shooting up schools, there would probably not be so many shootings. raching out to people (without putting our safety in danger!) could prevent violence. i read a story once about a man who shot and killed teens. when asked why he did it, he said it was because nobody ever smiled at him. reach out and be a friend to those who need it. the guys who do it want attention and to be loved. but if it gets creepy or puts you in any kind of danger, you need to get yourself out.

Well.

I'm not completely sure. Because, of course, there's the possibility that the guns would be abused, but is it not already easy to acquire a gun these days? Still, being able to carry a gun on one's person would lead to no good. The people that make rash decisions would be able to cause even more violence than a simple fight could lead to. Guns in schools are not the solution, but I'm almost positive that there will be no "easy fix".

Down with Gun Control

Yes, the guns would be abused.

But not if they could only be used with non-lethal rounds, or rubber bullets.

If even a handful of the more trustworthy students had these rubber-bullet guns, they could take out a gunman before he did too much damage to anyone.

Fly on,

That's smart

Thats a horrible idea. Does anyone remember Virginia Tech last year? Does no one remember that it was a student that killed all the innocent students before killing himself? If we gave students guns, some would respect them, and then others would abuse them. Possibly another Virginia Tech would ensue.
