The World Health Organization has called malaria “public health enemy #1.” Bill Gates calls it “the worst thing on the planet.” They’re right. The world has known how to beat malaria for more than a century, yet it remains the number one killer of children under five in Africa, claiming more than 1 million lives a year. That’s one child every 30 seconds dying from a completely preventable and treatable disease. Here’s what you can do:
Melinda's Backups Run and Walk to Save Lives
Join Melinda's Backups while they run and walk on behalf of Malaria No More at the 2008 "Country Music Marathon & ½ Marathon" in Nashville, TN on April 26th. Even if you're not up to the physical challenge, or you’re unable to make the trip, you can still show your support by spreading the word. E-mail it, post it on your myspace and/or facebook page, do what you have to do to inform!

Dance to Save a Life!
Dedicate a dance or series of dances to Malaria No More and commit a portion of the proceeds to Malaria No More. By doing so, your school can play a significant role in eradicating malaria. A group of high school students in Florida came up with the idea and dedicated their '07 Valentine's Day Dance to Malaria No More. They raised $1,600 to support the fight against malarial mosquitoes and saved lives. To learn more about the program, and how Malaria No More can support your Stayin' Alive program, Click here.
Veto the ‘Squito
Veto the 'Squito is a nonpartisan, nonsectarian, youth-led campaign protecting children and families from malaria. Veto the 'Squito S.W.A.T. T.E.A.M.s (Students Working As Teammates To Engage Against Malaria) are learning about the cause, educating others, contributing, and volunteering. SWAT TEAM members are raising funds with their families, schools, clubs, teams, places of worship and local media outlets to provide bed nets treated with insecticide and repellent to children and their families in sub-Saharan Africa. Veto the 'Squito's partners include Americans for Informed Democracy, Children for Children, and LOVE, HALLIE Foundation as well as students and schools around the country and the world.
Start an Awareness Campaign
Set up a table on Malaria Awareness day and pass out materials informing people about the problem. Take it to your school, church, or your local mall. Check out the facts and if you dare to take it up a notch, dress up like a mosquito. Chances are you'll attract loads of attention and that’s exactly what you want.
Pen an Article
Write a letter to the editor or write an article for your school or community newspaper explaining the purpose of Malaria Awareness Day and why it’s important. Provide facts and effects to make your article more empowering. And include pictures (with photo credits of course) to add a punch.
School ‘em in School
Ask your school’s administration to permit you to have a school assembly where you can give a presentation on malaria and why it’s so devastating a disease. Or ask a supportive teacher to allow you to give a short presentation in class.
Cookies for Malaria
Get the goods together and have a bake sale for a cause. Be sure to hang up flyers and announce the sale during lunch and class (even over the PA if you’ve got the power). Then set up a table during lunch, after school (everyone’s usually hungry then) or even in the morning when people need a sugar rush. Or take it beyond your school to the mall or your church. And be sure to attach a minnie fact sheet to your goods that they can read while they chew.
Nothing but Nets Game
All you have to do to help save a life is play Deliver the Net, a cool new game created by the UN Foundation to commemorate World Malaria Day, April 25th. The challenge: race the sun and hand out as many insecticide-treated bed nets as you can to African families. The more nets you deliver – before the mosquitoes come out – the more lives you save. Once you’re done playing the game, sign up, confirm your email, and a life-saving bed net will be sent on your behalf!
