We know how serious melanoma is, so what can you do to prevent skin cancer?
Tip 1
Don’t go to the tanner! The rays in a tanner are super concentrated. Is a tan worth saggy, wrinkled skin in a few years, and the possibility of cancer?
Tip 2
Avoid sunburns. Scientists think that even one severe, blistering sunburn in childhood can increase the risk of melanoma. Sunburns in adults also are dangerous.
Tip 3
Stay out of the direct sun, especially between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., when the strongest UV rays reach the earth's surface.
Tip 4
Avoid both direct and reflected sunlight. Sunlight reflected from water, sand, and snow can be just as damaging to the skin as direct sunlight.
Tip 5
Shield the skin with clothing. Long-sleeved garments made from light, tightly woven fabric can protect the skin in summer and yet be cool and comfortable.
Tip 6
Use a hat with a broad brim to shade the face along with extra sunscreen. The facial skin is sensitive, and no one wants wrinkles!
Tip 7
Use sunscreen. Pick a sunscreen that provides "broad spectrum" protection against both UVA and UVB rays in sunlight. Use sunscreen even on hazy or overcast days because UV rays can penetrate cloud cover.
Tip 8
To ensure continued protection, many sunscreens should be reapplied at least every 2 hours. Many sunscreens wear off with sweating and swimming and must be reapplied more often for maximum effectiveness. And don't forget your lips - lip balm with sunscreen are available at your local drugstore.
Tip 9
Sunglasses with at least 99% UV absorption provide the best protection for the eyes and the skin area around the eyes. Look for sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB light.
Tip 10
Maintain a healthy diet that is rich in antioxidants to support your immune system. Fruits and veggies are yummy, and the vitamins and minerals in them can help prevent cancer.
Tip 11
Check your body frequently for moles, lesions or other irregularities on your skin. Beware of moles that are irregularly shaped, discolored or changing. Follow up with your doctor if you notice anything, and ask whether you are at risk for skin cancer.
