Lots of people celebrate Cinco de Mayo by eating salsa and guacamole, and partying in sombreros. But do you know the real history behind this important holiday?

Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican Holiday to commemorate a historical battle between in the colonial French Forces and the Mexican people. The holiday has developed into a celebration of the Mexican nation and the many times its people have stood up to invading foreign forces.
Fact 2
It all started in 1861, when the Mexican government was bankrupt and devastated after fighting the long Mexican-American War. The President of Mexico tried to suspend the countries foreign debt payments for 2 years while Mexico rebuilt. The French, who were owed a lot, were not happy about this.

The French attempted to take advantage of Mexico’s war-weakened army. They invaded Mexico with the idea that if they couldn’t get their money, they would take Mexico’s land and independence.

Despite being tired from fighting a long war, the Mexicans didn’t take the French Army’s move sitting down. They stood up to the invaders with all the strength they could muster.

Mexican forces faced the French at the Battle of the Pueblo on May 5th, 1862, and fought until they retreated.

This holiday has come to symbolize Latin forces fighting off foreign influence and asserting independence even in the worst of times.
