Gay Marriage Ban Overturned in Cali

Gay Rights

On Thursday, May 15th, California’s Supreme Court overturned a voter-approved ban on gay marriage in a ruling that would allow same-sex couples in the nation's biggest state to tie the knot. "Our state now recognizes that an individual's capacity to establish a loving and long-term committed relationship with another person and responsibly to care for and raise children does not depend upon the individual's sexual orientation," the court wrote.

What do you guys think? Is this a step forward or a step backward for the nation?

To quote

a great article I read in Newsweek: "Polls showing opposition to gay marriage were proffered to prove that the court had overstepped its bounds, ignoring the fact that the most sacred business of judges is not to ratify the will of the majority but to protect the minority from its tyranny." WORD!

OH! lol

I see now. Well I'm sorry for my assumptions... thank you for agreeing with me. Smiling

You misunderstood makesYOUthink

I entitled my post "Well said" because I agreed with and liked the way you expressed your opinion ... We are obviously on the same page!

Huh?

I am not sure if you misunderstood what I was trying to get writergirl, but I am all for gay marriage! Please read my post again and try to explain where I say anything pertaining to gay marriage being a negative thing. Smiling

I think it's absolutely wonderful...

and if I can remember correctly, we do live in a "free" nation correct? Are we not able to practice, follow, believe in what ever we may without ridicule? Freedom is what this nation stands for and I uphold this value with the utmost esteem.

As for our nation moving in a backwards motion... I agree, but I do not think giving gays the right to wed is what is making us the nation we are becoming. GREED, I believe, is the biggest problem, not only in this country but, world wide. I also believe our current President didn't help us with the path to "righteousness". I could right a book on how I look down upon our President but I will not. Back to the discussion at hand.

I believe that love should be the only pushing factor when it comes to marriage. Live and let live... it won't effect your life in any direct way... will it? I think not.

Well said

makes you think ... The God I believe in accepts real, genuine love regardless of sexual orientation. Let them get married and pursue happiness.

With all due respect...

come what may x8, you're wrong about God being "kind enough to allow people to marry the person they love, regardless of their gender." He's not going to let that slide. Being a homosexual is a sin. "The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles. Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator--who is forever praised. Amen. Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion. Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them" Romans 1:18-32.

As for the main topic, we have taken so many steps backwards as a nation that it's frightening. We are a God-less country with very few morals anymore. We need to stop letting teenage girls walk around with barely any clothes on, and start teaching them to respect themselves and to respect God. We need to stop allowing children to curse, and start teaching them some manners. We need to, as a nation, set some standards. If we allow a man to marry another man or a woman to marry another woman, which isn't even the definition of marriage, who's to say what's next? Just to reiterate, America has become a frightening, God-less nation, and I'm ashamed of it.

I think this is a step in the right direction

A question to all of you: since when is marriage about gender? Because, I always thought it was about love. But, you know. I guess I'm a little naive, and I really don't know anything. (sarcasm)

I know many people who are gay, and they are wonderful people, and their sexual orientation doesn't bother me at all.

To me, it is completely unbelieveable that they haven't earned this right already. It doesn't affect my life if gay people get married. Why should we deny them the right to be happy? Like Thomas Jefferson said in the Declaration of Independence, we are all entitled to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Everyone can comment

Adults and teens alike. And (gasp!) even the DS staff. The only rule is that the exchange be civil and not offensive. Thank God for freedom of speech.

While I see your point dragonwings

Consider the many times that the government has overruled the wishes of the majority for the benefit of the masses. For example, when Lincoln emancipated the slaves, causing the Southern states to secede and, thus, spurring the Civil War.

where are the voters rights?

the gov. overruled the voters? shows us where our rights are going. marriage should be between a man and a woman.

i vote my cockitiel for president and my horse as his vice.

i wonder if the staff of

i wonder if the staff of dosomething.org is allowed to comment on the blogs they create... interesting. or are we not suppose to figure out that they are staff.

My opinion

Love is love ... The God I believe in does not condemn people for loving someone of the same sex. God celebrates love, in all its myriad faces and forms. I'm ecstatic about this decision. The country has taken leaps forward in becoming more tolerant and accepting of lifestyles that do not fit the "norm." We have a long way to go but this decision shows that we're heading in the right direction. I salute California for paving the way!

I don't lake gay marriage,

I don't like gay marriage, but I think if they want to get married, they should be able to. It's THEIR CHOICE NOT YOURS

its great

I think its great! If only all the other states could do the same thing.

Brianna: I respect your views but I obviously do not agree with them. There are many people in the U.S. who do not believe in the same God as you, like me, and why shouldn't those people go by their own beliefs? I think if there is a God, he should be kind enough to allow people to marry the person they love, regardless of their gender.

man, talk about 20 steps

man, talk about 20 steps backwards for the nation. o well its not for me to convict you guys. have fun explaining this to God on your judgment day.
