John Mayer is speaking up on his website about a Something he'd like to see change . . . .
American attitudes toward environmentalism seem to be rather polarizing, throwing people either in the It's-not-global-warming-it's-nature category or fanatic category. I seem to encounter a lot of the I-realize-it's-a-problem-but-it's-not-my-problem types. John Mayer is suggesting that we pay attention without having to feel married to the cause in an all-or-nothing sort of way. He's proposing we go Light Green by doing what we can right now . . . and not feeling guilty about that which we're unwilling to change yet. He has a pretty substantial blog entry on the matter today, and you can check it out on his website.
I think that his theory really fits with the Do Something ethos in that we can ALL do SOMETHING . . . we dont' necessarily have to do EVERYTHING to be an activist or a change-maker. I think it's easy to read about the Angelina Jolies and the Bonos of the world and sort of distance ourselves from them by saying, "Well, if I had their money, their resources, their time, etc. I would help too!" Most of us can't afford to repanel our homes for solar energy or hand-deliver food to hungry children in Third World countries. I think it's important to know, however, that the little contributions DO add up, they DO count, and they DO SOMETHING to change the world. If we all started thinking "Light Green", maybe we could shift social perspective and start making environmentalism more of a mainstream concern. Head over here to see what little things you can do today.
