See It: The Community being helped
Aprendiendo Inglés Sólido (AIS), which translates to “Learning Solid English,” was founded in 2002 at the Atlanta International School in Atlanta, GA as a community service group to meet the needs of the Hispanic Primary school community in Atlanta, GA. In addition to running successfully for five years in Atlanta, AIS has now started a chapter at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut to continue catering to the needs of the Hispanic Primary School community. In order to help the children improve their English, tutors help the students in the mechanics of the language, design arts and crafts projects to introduce them to American culture, play games that reinforce English vocabulary, and publish a Spanish newsletter informing the Hispanic community of events happening in and around New Haven. The AIS in Atlanta and New Haven tutor during the school day and at after school at public schools, private schools, church centers and community centers.

Project Updates:
I have impacted my school community, my university community, the community in Atlanta, and the community in New Haven. By tutoring and becoming involved in these different communities with the children, tutors, parents, and teachers, I really feel that I have made a difference. Over the past six years we have had over seventy tutors. Currently we have about thirty. We have helped more than five hundred people. When I graduated from high school I was worried that the service group would not continue but it has continued running and raising funds under the leadership of other members. We are planning on starting AIS at another school in Atlanta! The fact that we keep planning, tutoring, growing, and expanding shows that AIS is a huge success. The AIS branch at Yale is still planning on how we will use our grant because we haven’t started tutoring. In the next few weeks, we will be purchasing educational materials for the children such as games, books, flash cards, BrainQuest, and arts and crafts ctivities. The AIS branch in Atlanta is gearing up for its biggest fundraiser - the school fair. We already have a booth and will be selling cotton candy. This week we have to get all the supplies and ask for donations. Everybody is hoping that we will be able to raise a lot of money because in addition to buying educational supplies we are going to provide a child with a scholarship to attend the Solidarity School! Good luck to all the AIS volunteers in Atlanta
