Want to start something in my community, but how?

I want to start a club or commitee that plants flowers and trees and generally helps out the enviroment. I live in a small town, and some of the parks are full of weeds, and I want to get a group of people to help me and my friends pull out weeds, mow the lawns, plant flowers and trees and make the parks and highways look nicer. I'm just not sure how to start it. I am too young to drive, (13) and I just need some ideas for ways to start a club like this. If you have any ideas, just post! Also, since school's almost out, I don't really know how to contact people to join. If you have ideas about that, please post those too!

You Can Do It!

Small town governments are always looking for people to help out. I would recommend contacting your town mayor or president and tell them of your plan. You will likely be required to fill out a volunteer form for insurance purposes. The town leaders may have funds to help pay for supplies or area businesses may be willing to make some donations.

To contact people, try writing an article for the local paper. Editors are usually willing to publish an article if you write it. Area service organizations and churches are another great place to find volunteers. I would call these organizations and set up a time to talk to them.

I would select one small project, like a park, to start with. Identify all of the possible tasks in advance. It is better to have extra things that don’t get done than to have volunteers standing around. A small test project is a good way to learn what works and what could use some improvements.

It may sound like a lot of work, but it will all be worth it when you improve the appearance of your town. Don’t get discouraged, you can do it, and thirteen is not too young to make a difference.

Throw your dirty laundry somewhere else. We ask that you don't curse or use other inappropriate language here (if you have to think too hard about using a word, you probably shouldn't). This is a forum for the exchange of positive ideas, not a place to gang up on others or make anyone feel bad. Feeling good is good, right? Yup. Also, for your own safety, we ask that you don't post personal information about yourself or where you live on these boards. Please follow these simple and important rules or you WILL be voted off the island. Okay, to clarify, here’s the…Don’t DO It Checklist (for our Message Boards):
