See It: The Community being helped
The mission of Safe Connects is to promote Internet literacy and to teach Internet safety and online etiquette to elementary and middle school children through an interactive workshop conducted by teen facilitators. The Safe Connects lesson plan and accompanying worksheets cover important topics such as Passwords, Chat Rooms, Computer Viruses, and Internet Predators. During 2006, the Safe Connects program was presented at local middle schools and the first Safe Connects summer program was held at IUPUI. During the Safe Connects summer program, IPS students learned about Internet safety, leadership, and college preparation.

Project Updates:
17 inner city high school students were recommended by their principals or academic deans to participate in the 2007 Net Literacy summer program. These student volunteers (a) learned about 20 nonprofits that are enriching our community, (b) learned how to build a website using HTML and Dreamweaver, and (d) built 20 websites for nonprofits, most of which could not afford an online presence. The students also learned how to work in groups, leadership, and learning via a project based program. Each student also received a $2,000 scholarship from Purdue University, to encourage them to go to college. Our community is changed because we built websites that will help 20 nonprofits be more successful and better communicate their message to potential grantors, donors, and individuals that require their services. 17 student volunteers learned a skill, and 7 of them decided to continue using their Dreamweaver skills during the upcoming school year to continue helping the community. They will work with the nonprofits and possibly help an initiative that is working to reduce blighted parts of our community that have abandoned houses and drug dealers.
