My school doesnt recycle

Recycling

So heres the thing. My school has recycling bins in our classrooms, cafeteria, and in the halls. But guess what! They go in the same place as the trash. So therefore, my school doesnt recycle. I guess the principle and school board are trying to make us think that we are environmentally friendly when we aren't. It makes me really angry. I was thinking of setting up a recycling program at my school for my graduation project. What are some ways I could do this?

recycling the hard way

When I was in high school we had paper recycling, but no recycling for cans and bottles. Our Earth Club decided to start this, however we did not have that many members. It ended up that we put bins in all of the classrooms and in the halls and then had individual members sort it all after school. Once we had a huge amount we rounded it up, threw it in a big truck and took it down to the local recycling place.

Recycling Advice

The good news is you already have people trained to collect the recyclables. Now you need to determine what to do with the collected material. I would first check with the trash hauler for the school district. Many of these businesses provided recycling services free or at a marginal cost. It all depends on what and how much is being recycled. Another regional trash hauler may provide recycling services if yours does not. Another thing to look for is either municipal or non-profit recycling authorities. If available, they could provide some large bins to collect the materials for transport to their recovery facility. Good luck with your program.
