Do you think it makes a difference? And do you wash, or de-label the bottles before putting them into the bin? Personally I am a little skeptical on the matter because I can't imagine people washing all the bottles, taking off the labels and checking if they are recyclable before melting them down. But I still recycle anyways just because I know theoretically it is the right thing to do.

Recycling more difficult
Recycling more difficult than I ever thought. I care a lot for the environment that's why I bought a new set of Whirlpool parts to get a lower energy pollution level. Now I find it very difficult to recycle the old appliance parts, everything so disorganized in this area.
Re: Getting the recycling company to pay attention
I'm not sure what kind of area you live in (rural, town, suburbs, etc.) but if you can't get ahold of someone, you may just have to take your recycleables up to the recycling place yourself. If there isn't any such place, you could probably go up to City Hall or some similar place and ask to see the person that oversees all of that. This will probably be a pain, but in the end it might work. Hope everything works out for you!
Re: Recycling
Hi, I was wondering how you get money for recycling? Is this only in certain states or what? I know that where I live you have to take your stuff up to huge recycle bins yourself (it's kinda rural where we live), but you don't get money for it.
Make Recycling easier!
I know that this is kind of far fetched for us, but during last years travels I met this guy fromt he Netherlands, and he said that there packaging processes were rfegualted by the government (like an EPA program). They are only allowed to use one type of material such as glass, paper, aluminum, etc to package their goods versus having their goods packaged in Plastic bags, then put inside a box... like our cereal boxes.
This method seems like it would encourage recycling and make people more aware of our waste... It could probably prevent over half of the problem jsut by using one materail instead of DOUBLE WRAPPING-- then the burden of controlling waste wouldn't be on individuals, but instead the million dollar manufacturers.
Getting the recycling company to pay attention
Getting a recycling bin. MAN, I'M FRUSTRATED WITH THE RECYCLING COMPANY!!!!!! We just recently moved and we can't get a recycling bin sent to us. We've called about 3 times and either we're transferred, put on hold, or have bad luck with communicating. Anyway, is there a way we can get the recycling company to pay attention. Even the trash employees of the city don't seem to care for their work and will throw trash on our driveway if it's not wrapped right. IT'S TERRIBLE!!!!!! I know we can't sue them, but what can I do to get our house recycling again???
RE: reusing water bottles
Yeah of course! When I reuse a plastic watter bottle I only use it for about a week or 2, then I get a new one. We don't have any of the dishwashable bottles right now.
reusing water bottles
We're still trying to expand our recycling club to the portable classrooms outside the school. Since the school has been expanding rapidly, we've had to use classes on wheels. Anyway, Ushergirl posted:
"I know! I agree with you! I reuse stuff all the time, especially water bottles"
Make sure these aren't plastic like Arrowhead, Aquafina, the squeezie type with paper on them. Use the hard plastic that you can stick in the dishwasher. The throw away plastic bottles aren't recommended for keeping since algae and other bacteria begin growing inside them since you can't dish wash them. DON'T GET SICK TRYING TO RECYCLE! Do the right thing and be smart, use the dishwashable bottles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
recycling
To reply to the question about how to get the community involved, I have a recycling club at my high school and its great. Since it's start 3 years ago, we've gotten recycling programs in all 6 schools in our district. We have bins in every classroom, the lunch room, and in the hall (a good starting point for bins for the classrooms are just cardboard boxes with trashbags in them, but as the club accumulates money save for real recycling bins[instead of having to be wasteful with the trash bags]and gargage cans for the lunch room and hallway) and once a week we get together, collect all the bottles in the school and sort them out into cans, refundable bottles, nonrefunable bottles, and non refundable cans. Then we bring in the refundables and get our 5 cents a bottle/can- and with the others just bring them to the dump. Most bottles are recyclable, but not always refundable. The money we raise with our refundables goes to things like new bins etc. Try establishing one in your school... its ALOT of fun, and its good community service hours as well... goodluck! let me know if you have more questions.
Trashion Show
The Trashion show sounds like a great idea! Get the PTA involved! I'm sure some parents at school would be willing to help create outfits!
The DS club at my school is trying to raise awareness about global warming by inviting a guest speaker to talk to us about the issue.
Re: Recycling
My senior class is participating in something called Lick Global Warming by Ben and Jerry's. I want to participate in it but I can't find a project to do for my community of Burlington Vermont. What can I do?
Re: Recycling
Recycling is like Cause and Effect, to make new you have to use the old, I LOVE IT!
I recycle and I got my family to recycle, It is a wonderful, and honestly who wants to live next to a garbage hill?
Re: Recycling
Yeah I think it makes a diffrence! i f we did not recycle than there would be no way to make new things.
At my school we have a whole recycling team because the city dose not do recycling. The Recycling team gather the bins and load them into teacher's cars then transport them to the local recycle center
Re: Recycling
I know! I agree with you! I reuse stuff all the time, especially water bottles.
Re: Recycling
Our society is turning into a disposable society. More and more things are coming on the market that are made to be disposable, for convenience's sake. We have disposable everything! Think about it...how hard is it to bring a resuable water bottle to sports practice or to recycle old homework papers? Really not that difficult. And it does make a difference. Like tinklovers said, are we going to wait until everything runs out? Let's hope not.
Re: Recycling
people recycle so they can reuse material and dont have to get new ones from the earth. if we keep using these materials from earth, because noone recycles, we eventually run out, right? what do we do when we run out? wait another billion years for the material to form again? no, we recycle. but, how do we get this message out to other people? i dont know.
Re: Recycling
I see you're new to the boards Reese, welcome!!!!!!!!!

Re: Recycling

Re: Recycling
I am doing a fund rasier to go to Japan with an organization called People to People. I am collecting cans and scrapes of copper. What other things can I collect to get money? Please help! Thanks
Re: Recycling
roller_07, how were you able to expand your recycling to your whole community??? I'm very interested in this since this first meeting for our recycling club is this week. PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!!
Re: Recycling
At my school, i am in Spanish Club, we have a recycling crew and we go around all the classrooms in our school to get all the recyclables and we recieve money for it. That was last year, this year we have expanded our club and now we are doing it throughout our whold community. Its a good thing, more and more people have recycled and we get money for our school. So we all are benifiting.
Re: Recycling
Hey guys!!! My dad is a doc and so, he has the most paperwork I've ever seen in one place! So, I began a recycle drawer in my house. It's half full now and then I'm going to donate it to my school to be recycled. You'd be surprised how much paper a family can go through from school, work, doc appointments, records(which should be shredded), etc. There's lots you can do, just try and see what you can save and you'll come up with a plan!

I personally think that it will make a difference because mainly everything in the world in recyclable. It may also keep the wordl cleaner. I know an old lady who would walk the streets picking up the bottles, and cans. She'd put them in bags and take them to the recycling place. She didnt care about getting a few bucks but mainly because she felt better. I am just like her. I love to help the world and i my eyes, I think I am making the world or my house looking more beautiful.
Re: Recycling
I rinse the bottle out but I don't do all that.
Re: Recycling
I think there are places to donate them, so they can benefit others. Eye glasses can go to Sight Angels and cell phones can go to Cellphones for Soldiers. If you google either, im sure you'll find more info.

Re: Recycling
Recently my sister found out that Starbucks coffee grinds can be used as compost for gardening and it's for free!
Just thought I should spread the word for all gardeners that you can reuse old coffee grinds as compost. It’s like a whole other branch of recycling, pretty nifty. Are there other things that you guys recycle besides plastics? Like cell phones, or reading glasses?
Re: Recycling
Its not like the world is going to crash if one person doesn't recycle, but its an issue similar to voting. No one thinks one person doing it can make a difference so they don't. But if we all recycle, then it would definitly help reduce landfills and give us a better environment.

Thanks!
Re: Recycling
Hmm... It might be different for where you live but I have some tips from the NYC Recycling Program. And I think that on recycling days, you just put out your paper and plastic/glass recycling out in different containers out. But like I said, it might be different depending on where you are.
Here's a link for some tips that I find pretty helpful:

Hope this helps!!
Re: Recycling
Any tips that you could give me about how to recycle properly? You mught think that an odd question but it sounds like you know what you are doing and I am always open for new ideas. Like would the paper recycling be picked up by the same people who pick up the plastic and glass?
I am going to start to rinse things out before I put them into the bin. Yay for recycling power!
Re: Recycling
I personally think it makes a difference because at least you can reuse some materials instead of just throwing it all away to become part of a trash pile. In my house we separate everything: regular trash, paper recycling, plastic recycling and glass recycling. We also make sure all of the plastic and glass recycling has been rinsed before just tossing it in the bin.
It's great to later find things made out of recycled materials later (such as paper towels) and think that some people do help out in that way.
