Disaster Preparedness---the Video Game??

Disaster Preparedness

An article posted earlier this month in DelawareOnline, a news journal, talks about a training simulator called "Incident Commander" that is starting to be used around the country to train paramedics/relief workers in how to respond to natural disasters and/or terrorist attacks. Find the article here: http://www.delawareonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060906/LIFE/609060328/-1/NEWS01 What do you think about using video games/simulators to train relief workers? What are pros and cons? Do you think simulations are going to be the next big thing in training? Also, the article mentions that "Incident Commander" could possibly be released to the public. Would you pick up a copy and play? Share your thoughts! -JodiC (DoSomething Intern)

It soundds like it could work to train paramedics/emt but it will never prepare you for the real thing. it is easier to say tat you are prepared but when time calls you don't know where to start.

Incident Commander

I ordered a copy of Incident Commander because I am interested in disaster preparedness. It is more like a computer simulation than a video game, although SimCity is similar.

It is not particularly user friendly or entertaining, but it could be a useful training tool despite its limitations. I do not think it is cruel. Instead it is a low cost training resource aimed a helping emergency responders prepare for disaster.
