this much more healthily is to make sure that you eat a high protein dinner or snack right after you run (chicken, fish, cheese peanut butter) with some carbs. Then you won't be so starving later. Question For Dr Susan

I want to eat healthy but i dont know how i dislike virtually dislike all vegetables and i eat to much junk food. Can you help me? I want to eat healthy but i want it to taste good too.

I Have A Question Doc

I eat every 3 hours and I eat small meals. But since it's summer, I'm sleeping a lot. I sleep an average of 10 hrs a night, so when I wake up I'm so hungry. Any advice?

off-season eating habits

Like gweiner, I'm also a runner, but I run competitively only during the Fall Cross Country season (which lasts about 2-3 months). For the rest of the year, I run sporadically (which I know, is not good for me in the long term) due to other time commitments and swim extensively during the summer before my cross-country season.

I experience a lot of sudden weight loss during the season and then a more gradual weight gain after it's over. How can I have more control of my weight throughout the entire year?

Re: Do you have a question about Healthy Eating?

This is in response to eating high sugar foods at night... I was under the impression that as long as your calorie intake does not exceed the calories you burn within the day it should not matter what time you eat them. Although I'm not sure where I heard this so I'm wondering if you know more about it.

Also, thanks for the info about eating protein after exercising to avoid cravings later. I'm definately going to try that. I am surprised you recommend eating cheese. Cheese is high in saturated fat, sodium, not to mention the health problems caused from allergies to dairy that many people don't even realize where the allergy is coming from-- stomach problems, cold-like symptoms, and even rashes.

Isn't it true that vegetable sources of protein are much better for your body than animal sources? I've heard that vegetable sources of protein are better for endurance activities (like running).

*side note*Many olympic metal winning athletes are vegan, meaning they refrain from eating any animal products. Carl Lewis, a vegan, won 10 olympic metals (9 were gold) and 10 world championships.

Re: Do you have a question about Healthy Eating?

Hey, first let me apologize for taking soooo long to get back to you, I've had some log in issues for the last several days!! Anyway, to your question is a great one because when people need to gain a little weight they often resort to just eating junk food to get the extra calories which you already realize isn't the healthiest way. There are two ways to do it. First, you do need to eat more calories, but the best kind to eat are high protein, low fat or "healthy fat (not fat free) calories, like chicken, fish, nuts, lean meats and high fiber foods like grains. You should also eat frequently, like every couple of hours. In addtition to this, exercise that includes strength training (not only calorie burning) is a great, really healthy way to gain a little weight. Just to address the question about creatine. Creatine is a supplement that some athletes (especially weight lifters) use to gain muscle mass. It's not the best option for you because it's a temporary fix (you need to keep using it for it work) and it won't really deal with your underlying issue which is that your doctor wants you to figure out how you can change your actual lifestyle naturally to gain a little weight. Hope this helps, post again if have another question.

Re: Do you have a question about Healthy Eating?

Would Creatine be a viable option for her?

Eye-wink

Re: Do you have a question about Healthy Eating?

Hey Dr. Susan,

My doctor recently told me that I should put on some more weight- probably around 4 pounds... What would be the best way of going about this without eating unhealthily or over eating in general?

Re: Do you have a question about Healthy Eating?

Hi! I don't actually listen to Dr. Drew, so I can't say I have an opinion about him either way-sorry!

Re: Do you have a question about Healthy Eating?

Hi George,
This is one of the #1 questions I get! You're right, night time is not the greatest time to start eating high sugar snacks. You're craving them because your run burned up a lot of calories and your body is telling you to refuel. the way to do this much more healthily is to make sure that you eat a high protein dinner or snack right after you run (chicken, fish, cheese peanut butter) with some carbs. Then you won't be so starving later. If you do get the munchies at night, have a little of the sugar you crave and pair it with another protein snack which is what your body really needs.
Stay healthy, keep running!
Dr. Susan

What do you think of Dr. Drew Pinsky?

Re: Do you have a question about Healthy Eating?

Hey Dr. Susan,
thanks for providing our members with your advice and helping with content for our Healthy Eating cause.

I actually have a question too...
I usually have dinner around 7pm (after running) and by 10:30p I really start craving popcorn, ice cream, and generally super unhealthy but super tasty foods. I have heard that night time is the worst time to eat that kind of stuff,
any suggestions?
