Child Poverty

Teen Homelessness

I work at a food bank. Maybe my passion about child poverty has something to do with the the fact that I am only two years out of high school (so I'm closer to young children's age that adults), but I'm not sure. According to the National Center for Child Poverty www.nccp.org there are 6.1 million "young kids" (which is defined as children under six) living in poverty in the United States. Poverty does not mean "low income." It means EXTREMELY POOR. And this is in the United States. In case you're curious, 6.1 million kids translates into 25% of America's "young kids" (again, under age 6). Young kids are more likely to be poor than any other age group. They can't vote, they can't work, they don't go to school. They are completely dependent on others to get by. Oh, and here is one more piece of information: The United States has more child poverty than any other Western industrialized nation (major developed nation). Am I the only person who finds this TRULY INFURIATING? How can a country with so much wealth allow so many children to suffer? Something has got to be done.

Yes, lets do something!

Here are a few things we can do to make a difference in the lives of Americans living in poverty :

1.Pray for them.
2.Volunteer at a local soup kitchen.
3.Hold a bake sale with proceeds going to an organization that helps homeless people.
4.Hold a womanless beauty pageant. They are pretty easy to organize and usually raise LOTS of money.
5.Have a canned goods drive.
6.Look under your couch cushions and around your house for spare change and donate what you find to a charity benifiting the homeless.
7.Donate your old clothes to Goodwill or the Salvation Army.

There are so many easy ways to help. Good luck!!!!

Child Poverty

We need to find some ideas. Fundraising helps, but I want to do just a weekend or something like that to raise some good money. These children need help. We hear them, now we have to take the next step of doing something!!!!!!! DUH!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Child Poverty

God is love, and love is god, people one day will see that and go to him than we will all relize that the homeless do have a place to go. They can all go to god. He will be there, waiting for us to go him. Just pray, he will listen

Child Poverty in a Global Family

When a mother cooked a family meal she fed everyone in the family. She even fed the young ones, who did not yet have the capability to help her prepare the meal.

To do otherwise would be unloving. Not the trait of a caring mother.

She could have said: "go and fend for yourself," or, "go ask the neighbors." But that would not be reasonable. It would cripple the children. It would hurt the family.

She gradually showed the children how to prepare a meal. They watched, they learned, and they practiced. As they grew up, they acquired the ability to prepare a meal for others.

And so they gave. And they too helped others learn how to prepare a meal. It was a healthy family.

How strong is our human family : the family without borders and flags?

If it isn't strong, then Why? Is it about money, or is it about heart?

Everyone deserves to know Why. And everyone needs.

Re: Child Poverty

Hi,

I totally agree with you. Here in Canada, it's pretty harsh too, just not as much as the US. I am not going against the US when I say this but, I think the government (of all places) should be worried about the future generations, more than there "army and military forces". They put more money into that than basically anything else it seems. This also goes for the Canadian Government.

It's such a depressing thought that so many of us who have a roof over our heads complain about having to eat something we don't like, or complain about doing chores, when there are people out there who don't have a house, a family, clothes, or food to support themselves, especially since they are entirely way to young to do so.

I was thinking of joining this group called C.A.R.T.S. They collect donations of food, clothes and neccesities. It's a whole group of people that get together and pile all the donations into shopping carts and deliver them to poor people that live on the streets. Smiling I thought that was such a good group to be a part of.
