Are legal drugs safer than illegal drugs? Do you think transfats more dangerous than cigarettes? Just some questions I have about how the U.S. government controls and regulates drugs...

what kind of drugs are you talking about? not all are dangerous for society. marijuana is not that dangerous at all, its just like smoking a cigarrette only it gives the person a euphoric feeling and makes them happier. you know how people always say the smoke cigs because theyre stressed..what if they smoked weed instead? theyd be happier and not as stressed and wouldnt have to smoke as often because the relief of stress will last longer than smoking a cig.
and did you know that caffein in coffee goes through a persons system the same way cocain does? caffeine damages the brain receptors that help you sleep..
i think you should learn and research more about what you're talking about before you make a mistake.
gov. control
alright so what kind of drugs? certain drugs that are illegal have far worse side effects than others. cocaine is waay worse than cannibis(marijuana). and in my opinion, cigarrettes are also worse than cannibis. I they put all those horrible chemicals in cigarrettes, do they put the same chemicals in cannibis? honestly i dont know if they do, but i dont think so. they are just both plants/herbs, but adding chemicals i think is what makes them bad. if weed was legal, would could be controlled better than it is now.
legal drugs like...medicine you get from the doctor? sure those are safe, but if you think about it what exactly is it? what do they put in the legal drugs? are the things they put in it safer..i'm not sure.. long term use of any kind of drug can be harmful, i'm sure.
but whats worse, using an herb/natural healer, or a chemical/man made medicine?
I think we hear more about over dosing on legal drugs and alcohol than we do on illegal drugs. but i must advise dont do crack or meth..terrible chemicals and side effects in those.
I am definitely against
I am definitely against legalizing drugs, how can these people legalize something that is so dangerous for the entire society? There have been several failed attempts for legalizing and I think we should learn from these mistakes...

Re: Legal Versus Illegal
good point. its all bout the structions
Re: Legal Versus Illegal
a drug is never ok but it can be safer if it is legal than if it is illegal. if you follow the instructions on over the counter or prescription drugs, you can have some minor side effects, yes, but since they have been approved by the FDA, they are highly likely to not kill you. they are there to help.
Re: Legal Versus Illegal

Re: Legal Versus Illegal
then, how can we do it
Re: Legal Versus Illegal
Not a bad idea
Re: Legal Versus Illegal
maybe, we could all do something. you know, start a project that will help people understand what harm can come from misusing drugs.
Re: Legal Versus Illegal
Totally right, Gweiner. I forgot about that aspect.
Re: Legal Versus Illegal
Yes I agree with you
Re: Legal Versus Illegal
Thank you Tinklovers.
I think you are right, we definitely need to do something about drugs (illegal or legal) that cause harm.
Most of what can be done relates to spreading information to the people making the decisions to smoke, drink cough syrup, drink etc.. Heroes- Of course it is an individual's right to choose to what the 'do to their bodies' (assuming it passes the rigoruous regulations of the FDA) but many times people and especially teens don't completely understand the impact of different drugs.
Re: Legal Versus Illegal
well, im sorry. just trying to give all you guys a compliment.
Re: Legal Versus Illegal
You're assuming things too quickly; not everyone here is opposed to cigarettes. I personally feel that it's fine for people to treat their own bodies however they want to.
Re: Legal Versus Illegal
okay, so I learned alot from reading yall's posts. i didn't know half of this stuff! you guys are really smart, and i think someday you all will change the world. what if we could do something? you know, to help out with all this stuff going on. Like, ciggerates! Somehow, we need to get through to people that cigerrates are bad. not just reminding them ciggerates are addictive and could kill them. you really think they forgot? NO! they know one day they are gonna die from it. maybe, show them the effects. like, what goes in inside the body. every time you smoke a ciggerate, it takes away 1 minute of your life. how many cigerrates are in a pack? well, if you smoke a pack every three days, then your dead when your 50. someone needs to stop it. you guys could be the ones! wouldnt that be great? if you prevented somebody from smoking? you could make a difference! you guys sure do know enough! think about it!
Re: Legal Versus Illegal
Ok, whether legal, or illegal, each drug has its own effects. Some can be used for the good when taken in small doses, yet when taken to a higher level they can be harmful. Anything that has a power of changing anything in your body is a drug of course. Legal and illegal doesn't really matter. Illegal drugs seem to be more powerful while legal drugs cause a problem for people, especially kids. A drug is still a drug and can have harmful effects on the body. Now, in drug dealing, there are also murders and all that. My city had only 14 homicides last year, but because of the drug use, we're up to around 50 so far this year. Drugs are harmful, whether they're illegal or not!
Transfats are very harmful. they cause multiple heart problems and of course obesity and overweight among people. Transfats are best to stay away from, however, they're OK every once in a while. When weight is gained, you can loose that weight, but the effect on your heart doesn't go away. Your heart can improve, but it can't completely heal like a cut on your hand. Same thing goes with cigarettes. Smoking, some people can smoke every once in a while dealing with stress. If they stop, it slows the effects, but in the long run you've still damaged your lungs. Both transfats and smoking hurt the long term health of your heart and lungs.
Re: Legal Versus Illegal
I second that. If "our poison" causes laws to be broken then they can step in.
Re: Legal Versus Illegal
Alcohol is worse then weed as far as affects/domestic problems go, but I dontthink it's the governments place to "pick our poison" for us.
Re: Legal Versus Illegal
A drug is any substance that causes a chemical change in the brain or body, causing an altered state of mind. By this definition, we have many drugs that are legal and illegal. Caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine are perfectly legal, with the latter two killing over 500,000 people in the U.S per year. In comparison, illegal drugs amount for approximately 20,000 (known) deaths.
Does this mean we should outlaw all drugs? Not necessarily. The one's we have outlawed are directly killing less people, but there are many more killed in the trafficking of illegal drugs. Marijuana, an illegal drug, has accounted for exactly ZERO deaths, and we know there are plenty of people who use it.
We could legalize everything, making it easier to get and thus less people killed in getting it. That would likely cause an explosion of direct drug deaths, though. Even if that tactic WOULD be successful, such legislation would never be passed.
What do we do then? Educate. We have to teach people WHY they should not do drugs. We have to give them a purpose so they will focus on that and not on smoking their lives away. We shouldn't worry about government regulations, in my opinion, but instead try to help the people around us that are hurt by drugs and prevent other from putting themselves in the same situation.
Re: Legal Versus Illegal
well, actually weight gain is just the superficial efftect of trans fats. Coronary artery disease is the real problem.
I found this statement on the American School of Clinical Nutrition website. It's from an article written by the Department of Nutrition, Harvard School of Public Health:
"... 30,000 premature deaths [per year] in the United States are attributable to consumption of trans fatty acids."
By numbers alone, cigarettes are far worse though.
This statement is from the National Center For Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion website:
"Cigarette smoking is the single most preventable cause of premature death in the United States. Each year, more than 400,000 Americans die from cigarette smoking." ...plus another 3,000 deaths per year from secondhand smoke.
Re: Legal Versus Illegal
Most kids I know don't bother to buy it. They just shoplift.
Re: Legal Versus Illegal
It depends on the context. I mean if you're comparing taking 5 milligrams of tylenol, compared to shooting up with 5 milliletres of herion, then the herion is obviously worse. People getting high off of legal drugs is becoming a bigger issue too though, solely because any kid can walk into a drugstore, by a bottle of cough syrup for $5, drink it all and enjoy its effects.
I do not think that transfats are more unhealthy than cigarettes because you can excercize to reduce the effects of transfat (weight gain) where as options to reduce cancer are limited and not garunteed to work.

Re: Legal Versus Illegal
Define 'drug'. Is the potassium inside a banana a drug? Is the potassium in a supplement a drug? Is the acetate in vinegar a 'drug'? How about aspirin - it's just another organic molecule. How do you tell the difference?
Re: Legal Versus Illegal
Legal or not a drug is still a drug. No drug is "ok" and good for you to use no matter how fun or good it looks. It does serious damage to you, your body and your life. I've seen it all first hand!
