DISPATCH: ZIMBABWE

Global Extreme Poverty

Global poverty is obviously one of the largest issues in the world right now, and Africa suffers as bad as any place in the world, if not far worse. One of the worst crises in the world is taking place in Zimbabwe right now, where the unemployment rate is nearly 85%, the poverty rate is up to almost 90% and the HIV/AIDS epidemic is wreaking havoc on the population. Fortunatley, some people are taking a stand to help this nation on the verge of collapse. The band Dispatch recentley played 3 nights at MSG and donated all the proceeds to Zimbabwe. I attended the finale show and it was utterly amazing. Did anyone else go to any of the shows? Ever see Dispatch? (You should.)

More importantly, what can YOU do to help out nations like Zimbabwe? Maybe a huge sold out rock concert isn't necessarily something you can do every day, but let's think of some ideas to help out people who really need it.

Zimbabwe

I'm glad to see that you're concerned. Right now, it is difficult to provide support in Zimbabwe because of the political environment. Sometimes, we must remember that we must choose wisely when deciding when and where to get involved - it's possible to make things worse rather than better.

According to many reports, aid from foreign nonprofits is often diverted by the ruling political party (Zanu PF), and doesn't always reach the citizens who need it most. Money donated from these organizations can be stolen or paid in bribes to government officials, and imported goods like food and medical supplies are often confiscated and sold on the black market. The government of Zimbabwe is very bureaucratic and centralized which makes setting up any type of operation there difficult.

Possibly the best thing to do right now is to wait for things to stabilize. It's a very hard decision to make, but even well intentioned efforts can cause more harm than good.

If you do want to get involved, consider nonprofits in South Africa, where much of Zimbabwe's middle class has fled. There is always a need for strong education and health care.

What can be done

This is a serious problem in Zimbabwe and i would love to help. But the question is what can be done the only thing that i can think of is to fundraise and send all the money to an organization that is helping Zimbabwe.
