Disrespect against the homeless

Teen Homelessness

Homelessness is a huge issue everywhere in the world. However, I'm more worried just about the disrespect these people receive from others. Usually, homeless people are considered as poor, unhealthy, lazy, and sometimes looney people. These people are PEOPLE!!! We need to treat them with the courtesy and respect as everyone else. We cannot judge them for their position at all because we have not been in their shoes. This goes for every person which is why we should treat EVERYONE with the same amount of respect, whether they're a CEO of a company, a teacher, a nuclear scientist, the president, or a homeless bum. Earlier this week, the kids on my bus decided to gather up loose change and put it together in a ziploc. There's a regular man who stands at the exit with his usual sign saying 'spare change'. The kids decided to throw that bag out in front of him. Now, this may sound like a good thing. "Hey, they gave him money, that's good." Yeah, but they didn't do it to give him money, they did it to see his reaction. It was to see what a homeless man would do, an experiment, if he was given change. They got a reaction alright. He flipped them off as we drove away. Would you do that to anyone in your family? What about friends? Show them something valuable, just to see their reaction? This is disrespect and it needs to stop. Please spread the word on equality for the poor and homeless!!!

Upsetting

This has been on my mind for a while now.
Did you know that sadly there is even a group of movies showing acts of disrespect and harm to innocent homeless people on the streets?! the main movie titles are Bumfights. they were being sold on Amazon and book stores! amazon and most book stores agreed after responses from National Coalition for the Homeless (NCH) agreed to stop selling the movie. however i heard from an amazing motivational speaker that some bookstores refused to stop selling the videos because they were making good profits on them.
what has the world come to when people pay to watch the agony and pain of unsheltered, hungry med, woman and children being tormented by teens and adults who should be ROLE MODELS!

Sad, But True...

On one of my recent trips to Denver with the school, I was about to give some of my money to a homeless person on the side of the freeway when my friend stopped me by saying that he'd only go buy liquor or drugs or go waste it on something else... Is that right? How was he to know? There was a man sitting outside a Denny's missing a leg with a sign 'will work for food' and you think he's going to go blow it? Some people like to think they know what's best for the homeless, but they really don't.

---

Well first of all I completely agree. Homeless people are humans and we shouldn't treat them as any less. It also seems like after a while they give up and just become the lazy, bums who don't care about their lives. How can we stop their mindsets from changing?

Wow

Thats really sad. Yeah I dont understand how people can do this. They think because somebody is homeless, they can just treat them poorly, but what others dont realize, is that homeless people are humans too, and needed to be treated as such.

seventeen magazine article

If you could, send that to my email. I'm not sure if it'll show, but give it a try. I'd love to read it!!! There's been some horrific stories. My dad has a bunch of stories working in the ER. They found a homeless man who had clothes grown into his skin. He hadn't clipped his toenails and had a lot of infections in his nails, skin, etc. I wanted to recommend him to that reality show that share ER stories. I just don't understand how peoople can treat someone so cruelly, homeless or not.

Seventeen Magazine Article

Recently in seventeen magazine, there was an article on four boys who killed a homeless man for fun. They liked to go around and beat homeless people becausethey were usually too weak to fight back. Its a horrific story. I think the world needs to be aducated more on tolerance of different types of people.

we can't turn our back on the homeless

You're right NYChica. We can't turn our back. These people need to be cared for and shown that they're just like us. Some need help, some need to be in a mental hospital, some don't have families, there are so many more issues causing them to live without a home. We need to seriously look into this!!! VOTE for the ladybug foundation on the BRICK AWARDS. She's doing a great job so far!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree!

Some people don't have the support system that the rest of us have (a home to go back to, parents, family, friends, etc) that they can rely on in tough times. Further, it is true that some homeless people are suffering from severe mental illnesses and we cannot turn our back on these people!

Disrespect leads to Abuse

I think this is a really important issue LaLa because disrespect easily turns into abuse. There was recently a lot of publicity around these terrible videos called 'Bum Fights' where young people were making homeless people fight each other for money while filming it.

I always felt like if more people knew the full story of how someone became homeless they would be able to empathize with them.
A lot of the disrespect comes from assumptions that homeless people are just lazy, which 90% time really isn't true...
