Trans Fats are Banned (in NY)

Healthy Eating

New York City will be the U.S.'s first city to ban trans fats. The NY Board of Health unanimously voted to ban trans fats in all New York restaurants starting in July, 2007. The biggest offenders have typically been fast food restaurants that use oils with trans fats in them. Trans fats have been directly linked to heart disease and raising bad cholesterol. Is the Board of Health abusing its power? Do you think a change like this in your city or state would help make people healthier? How would you make it happen in your area?

You can't imagine how glad I

You can't imagine how glad I am to hear about this, I am not a New York citizen but I think this is a good start and this rule should be applied in all the states. Health problems related to bad food are overwhelming and people should wake up and start learning new habits to keep their health.

Re: Trans Fats are Banned (in NY)

McDonald's recently announced that they have found a new trans-fat-free oil for cooking -- An annoucement coming not long after New York City's ban of trans-fats.

Here is an article from the New York Times:

Do you think McDonald's will lose some customers? Does it change your opinion about the fast food chain??

It seems like new laws in New York may spread quickly across the nation!

Let me know what you think!

Re: Trans Fats are Banned (in NY)

Hey New Yorkers,

Does no trans fats mean one can no longer buy those breaded cheese things at McDonalds? They were definitly an amzing part of New York I discovered during the YAC trip.

Re: Trans Fats are Banned (in NY)

I guess threr is alot of people who agreed to it, although this is stupid. people can eat what they choose to eat. and, if you bann them in new york, they should ban them evrywhere els too. just so the people in new york dont think their fat, or sometthing

Re: Trans Fats are Banned (in NY)

I, too, agree that this is a step too far. From labels on jars of peanut butter that state 'May contain peanuts', to me not being able to order my steak medium rare at Bob Evans any more, the line charting safety versus individual freedumb has slipped again.

Re: Trans Fats are Banned (in NY)

I'm sorry...but this is REDICULOUS!!!!! What's next, products with sugar or saturated fat? Consumption of too much sugar has been linked to diabetes and obesity just as saturated fat has been linked to clogged arteries and heart disease.

THIS is ONLY the beginning of the end if this type of control is allowed to continue! People are beginning to do LESS and LESS for themselves! I think it is VERY important that restaraunts display weather or not they use such fats so the consumer can DECIDE for THEMSELVES! Damn it...it's MY right to eat what I want! I DO NOT need some morons in goverment to decide. I'm sure they like a greazy burger and fries once and awhile. Who the heck are they to make a decision for EVERYONE ELSE when there are MORE important things to think about like crime and poverty! These people need to get a life!!

Re: Trans Fats are Banned (in NY)

Exactly I agree with you Eva.

Re: Trans Fats are Banned (in NY)

I applaud this new ban! It is unbelievable how many foods (other than fried/fast foods) contain trans fats. Things like cookies, pizza dough, pancakes and crackers are all made with partially hydrogenated soy bean oil. Restaurants and food manufactures need to find healthier oils to use in their products.

Re: Trans Fats are Banned (in NY)

I do think that it is abusing its power because restaurants have a right to use ingredients as long as it isn't poisonous to the customers. There are trans fats in alot of foods. It is someone's choice if they chose to eat french fries and fried chicken as a dinner meal.

Re: Trans Fats are Banned (in NY)

This is awesome! People will definitly start to eat healthier if health food is their only option!

I don't see why this is such a bad thing........It could make a huge difference, in what people eat and make them healthier.
