Union Square's Fatal Brawl

School Dropouts

Stories Brooklyn Teen Killed During Street Fight In Union Square December 07, 2006 A Brooklyn teenager died last night after he was stabbed during a street fight at the Union Square Farmers Market. Taishawn Bellevue, 17, was stabbed in the chest during the melee that broke out around 4 p.m. yesterday. He later died at the hospital. There are reports that as many as 50 people were involved in the fight, but the victim's mother says she doesn't believe it was gang-related. "My son was not a Crip, a Blood; this is not gang related," said Michelle Bellevue. "This is all, I believe, envy because he was a very good basketball player, and people just decide to hate on him. And I don't appreciate it, but God knows best." Two other 17-year-olds were also hurt. Police say one of the injured teens was stabbed several times in the back and is still recovering at the hospital. Another was hit in the head but has been treated and released. No arrests have been made. What will it take to stop violence in schools, streets, America and the rest of the world. where did violence start and when will it end?

one question: when is that?

Re: Union Square's Fatal Brawl

This is crazy! I hate seeing violence There is just too much violence and murder in this world. I cannot wait until Jehovah's Kingdom is finally here, I know I speak for all Jehovah's Witnesses and good people in stating that: I am tired of living in Satan's Playground, and cannot wait until God's Kingdom is finally here.

Re: Union Square's Fatal Brawl

I think that is so scary Iwould hate to loose someone in portant to me because of a shooting!!!!!!!!

Re: Union Square's Fatal Brawl

I agree that most people that are younger get away with more as children. I think to try to prevent some violence as a matinince, like shots and eye exams, starting in third or fourth grade {?} phsycatiric evaluations. This might solve some problems, but could ruffle a few feathers and end up doing more damage. In serious cases kids are tried as adults. I think that this is uncalled for. They should just be tried as children with a severe punishment.

Re: Union Square's Fatal Brawl

Davon Smith's questions, "What will it take to stop violence in schols, streets, America and the rest of the world. Where did violence start and when will it end?" are very important ones. Understanding where violence began is necessary to understand its end.

The Bible mentions the first murder being that of Abel by his brother Cain. For this Cain was punished. (Genesis 4:10-12)

The Scriptures also mention a complete end to violence in the future. In an issue of The Watchtower, published by Jehovah's Witnesses, it stated: "At Isaiah 60:18, God gave the assurance: “No more will violence be heard in your land, despoiling or breakdown within your boundaries.” That prophecy had an initial fulfillment when God brought his exiled people back to their homeland. It also has a grander fulfillment that we can enjoy. Jehovah God is not “promising too much.” As the Most High and the Creator of humankind, he is in the best position to end the “cycles of violence.” Under God’s Kingdom, peace will prevail. Violence will be gone forever!—Daniel 2:44."

Yes, the human family can look forward to complete relief from violence by means of Jehovah and his Kingdom.

Jehovah's Witnesses eagerly endeavor to share this hope with others as it is laid out in the Scriptures. Please look for them in your area.

Re: Union Square's Fatal Brawl

I think that punishments need to be more severe than they are for kids. Too many kids get away with just "a slap on the wrist" for crimes that adults should go to jail for. I think that any person 18 or younger that commits a crime should have to go to a rehabilitation and educational therapy session so they can not only suffer for their crimes, they can learn how to stop crimes and how to educate others as well. Also, they should extent jail time. Punishment need to be a detterance to others, not just punishment for the accused.

For this crime, im thinking maybe 6 months in therapy plus jail time?

Re: Union Square's Fatal Brawl

It doesn't seem like the school could have prevented it. If they have metal detectors and security at the school to prevent weapons from entering, that's as much of a deterent for bringing weapons near the school as they could possibly have control over. It seems these kids had an agenda beforehand, and not much can be done about that (by the school).

Its a family problem. A lot of the time it seems like the people who are having the most children are the least qualified to raise them. These kids are being raised by kids, and its back to survival of the fittest. I don't know what the solution is. Its pretty sad and scary.

As far as punishment, I think with younger people (21 and under) they should force them to learn and work as they're serving time. What good is a young criminal going to be to anybody after he/she's been locked up with professional criminals for a few years with no positive influence or knowledge given to them (forced on them) to prevent more ignorant, impulsive behavior?

I personally think they should have young criminals build self-sustainable land and housing. They should be introduced to the world without human destruction. Show them what it takes, fundamentally, to sustain life. Make them take a step back from the secondary world they've always lived in. Even if it doesn't make a profound impact on everybody, knowledge like that could never be bad. If nothing else they be preventing whatever waste would have occured had they not been living and working in a permaculture environment while they were there and for whoever is there in the future. It would be cheaper for the government and prison system and it would be providing a type of rehabilitation.

Re: Union Square's Fatal Brawl

This tragedy really shocked Do Something because our office is located right on Union Square. And the highschool students involed go to school around the block.

Since the incident happened outside of the school it doesn't seem to matter that the school checks for weapons when students come in.

Over the weekend a 16 year-old, was charged with second degree murder, gang assault, and weapons possession in the death of Taishawn Bellevue, 17. --> whole story: http://www.ny1.com/ny1/content/index.jsp?stid=9&aid=64943

What do you think his punishment should be?

How do you think school could have prevented this particular tragedy?
