Drug Abuse- Disease Or Not?

Drug Abuse

- Okay now I have a question for EVERYONE. Is drug abuse a disease? Can it be cured? and finally is it possible to stay clean and sober for the rest of your life? Personally I think it is NOT a disease, but a problem people have, which can be "cured" by completing a program and being careful about the people you hang out with and the places you go. Possible to stay clean and sober for the rest of your life? Yes I do believe its very possible, you just have to want it. What do you guys think? **Note** this post was not made to start an argument with others. I simply want your input.

Harmful Prescription drugs

There are many pills taken by people for getting relief from pain such as aspirin, disprin, etc. Some people take it very frequently even if they have little pain. This result in addiction to these legal drugs and thus these prescription drugs also becomes harmful in such cases.

A disease is something you

A disease is something you catch through a virus or similar parasite. Drug abuse is not caught when you are bitten by a mosquito. Drug abuse is something you do to yourself.

narconon

I think drug abuse is a problem not a disease i suggest a drug treatment center

It is my personal view that

It is my personal view that it is a mental disease, not just simply a disease. If a person is committed to staying off of it and remaining clean for the rest of their life, it is most certainly possible. Through the advances in psychology, anything can be cured, I'm sure, that is mentally involved.

Drug use is a matter of

Drug use is a matter of choice. But once someone becomes dependent on it, it is no longer is a choice. Where does the fault lie? At that point, is it really, as they say, beyond their control? I don't have a one-sided answer to that.

Disease is too derogatory of a term, but I can't deny that it is also partly psychological.

is addiction a disease

no, in my opinion it cant be a disease, since im facing 2 years in prison right now for a crack cocaine addiction, i have not heard anyone say that they were locked up because thgey have cancer!

that doesnt even make sense.

FIRST of all a diesease is NOT a choice, people don't wake up and think "hm, today I'm gonna go out and get some lupis. It's gonna rock!" No a diesease is somehting you have no control over. An addiciton is your choice. You decided to start doing whatever drug or drinking whatever you drink. That was your choice! so to call something that is completly free will a diesease is offensive to anyone who has a real diesease.

Definition of disease: The

Definition of disease: The term 'disease' refers to any abnormal condition of an organism that impairs function. This causes discomfort, dysfunction, distress, or death to the person afflicted or those in contact with the person. ...

Does that answer the question?

YES it can be cured.

Agree

Any time a substance is directly affecting the brain, the brain naturally reacts and can become addicted.
At the same time it can be hard to be sympathetic to drug abusers that steal, harm and destroy communities.

reply

It's a disease alright and it's spreading really fast. I wish people could just stop this phenomenon. Maybe if people would know more about a drug addiction treatment center then we would have a better life.

Before you begin the debate

Before you begin the debate about whether drug abuse is a disease or not, you must first look at the circumstance surronding the situation. For example, no one will dispute that High Blood Pressure is a disease. WIth that said, while a person is born with the genetics to one day develop High Blood Pressure, it isnt until they begin a certain pattern of living or a certain lifestyle that they develop the condition. In my opinion, the same goes for drug addiction. We each are born with a weakness for certain things, some of us chocolate, some drugs. A vast amount of drug users are addicted today because they use drugs as an escape from the world. Certain cirsumstances led them to believe that using drugs was the only escape they could get. Dont get me wrong, I am not condoning this behaviour, simply stating the facts.

Most people never debate if alcoholism is a disease, but what few fail to realize is that alcohol is also a drug. While it is readily available, and once you are over the age of 21,legally accepted, bottom line is that alcohol is a drug. It controls the brain and causes certain feelingsin people that can only be replicated by using more. This is how drug abuse elevates. Treatment isnt simple, and never easy. Every day, regardless if you've been clean for 5 years, is a struggle.

But thats an answer to a whole other question. My opinion on drug abuse as being a disease or an addiction...........DISEASE

Disease....some abuse

According to many physicians and researchers drug addiction/alcoholism is a disease...passed down through numerous generations of unsuspecting people.

If you are allergic to strawberries...but, you never eat them...because you are allergic to them...does that mean that you are not allergic?

Ultimately, to drink alcohol or use drugs is a personal choice....some people are able to drink/use recreationally...some are not.

Anybody, using/drinking uncontrollably has a problem!

Okay

So you agree with me, but all you did was explain the more technical terms............

*sigh* Ushersgirl,

*sigh*

Ushersgirl, regardless of what you believe, the majority of drugs including alcohol, tobacco, heroin, crack, meth, and others, cause a chemical or physical addiction. This is why it's possible to die during withdrawel. In ADDITION to that, they cause a psychological, or mental addiction. This is what makes you want to continue doing them. This is the 'in your head' part.

Marijuana is unique in that it is the only drug that causes psychological but NOT chemical addiction.

Difference of opinion

Difference of Opinion. Most of it is actually in the person's head. Heroin...now thats a different story. I do believe that with Heroin, its not all in your head, but actually a true addiction. It just depends on the drug. I do still believe that nobody should have to depend on drugs to make them feel better. or alcohol for that matter. When people get upset, try a different tactic. When I get upset about something, I listen to my favorite artists, or play video games. Sometimes I talk to someone about it. Actually thats one of the first things I do, is talk to someone about it. Then I listen to music, or whatever I choose to do.

DISEASE!!!!!!!!!

It has to do with drugs becuz i am showing you what a disease is and how the drug relates to the word DISEASE

but anyways, w/e...

Re: Drug Abuse- Disease Or Not?

i agree but the addiction is passed on

Re: Drug Abuse- Disease Or Not?

on my dads side of the family, most of my family are on drugs. I sort of regret not knowing that part of my family, but it's not really MY mistake to regret. Maybe alcoholism and drug habits can be inherited, but that doesn't mean you HAVE to be an addict, you just have to try harder not to get caught up in that. Whether you inherit an addiction or not, it's your choice to start smoking or drinking or doing drugs.

Re: Drug Abuse- Disease Or Not?

What does this have to do with drug abuse??????

Re: Drug Abuse- Disease Or Not?

I also believe that drug abuse is a disease, just like alcoholism. It is something that is genetically passed, and it has bad consequences.

disease- a disorder with a specific cause and recognizable signs and symptoms

There, a disorder, being addicted, with a specific cause, your body is so used to using it, that it feels as if it cannot go on without it, with recognizable signs and symptons, a sign might be that you do them period.

Now, if you want to try and prove me wrong, you can, TRY. But my mom went through rehab and AA, and they learn all about drug abuse and all those types of addictions, so if you think you know it all, try going to like 50,000 AA meetings!

Re: Drug Abuse- Disease Or Not?

Like I said, this comes from the Bible, it means if you want to be forgiven for your sins (things you've done wrong) by God then you must forgive your fellow man/woman for sinning against you (doing you wrong)

Re: Drug Abuse- Disease Or Not?

all righty then, i still dont get what you mean by in order to be forgiven for your sins you must first forgive the fellow man for his sins

Re: Drug Abuse- Disease Or Not?

okay thats cool, everyone is entitled to believe what they choose I guess. Sometimes their eyes need to be opened though.

Re: Drug Abuse- Disease Or Not?

disagree

Re: Drug Abuse- Disease Or Not?

welcome! to the boards! i agree with you, frezalda

Re: Drug Abuse- Disease Or Not?

you think its a disease no matter what? Its not a problem people sometimes give themselves?

by the way, welcome to the boards. Smiling

Re: Drug Abuse- Disease Or Not?

Disease!!!

Sure, most everyone if they were exposed to sertain drugs would be addicted. Some people have a hereditary gene that stengthens the addiction.
(some people can even get addicted to peppers)

Re: Drug Abuse- Disease Or Not?

so agree or disagree?

Re: Drug Abuse- Disease Or Not?

that makes since. i know you can be born with it

Re: Drug Abuse- Disease Or Not?

It's only a disease if you're born with it (yes this is possible), but if you start on your own then its a problem that needs corrected.

Re: Drug Abuse- Disease Or Not?

well, i dont know. its a problem and a disease!

Re: Drug Abuse- Disease Or Not?

No I dont think it was meant to start an argument. I dont think its a disease, I think its a problem as I stated before.

Re: Drug Abuse- Disease Or Not?

personally, i think drug abuse IS a disease. i mean, if you have a drug problem, you dont know when to stop. you love the feeling you have a "friend" who always keeps you high. there is no cure for this common diesease, but you can get help. yes, it is possible to stat sober all your life,as long as you dont feel the need to get high. btw, this was not meant to start an arguement!
