Mandatory Or Not?

School Disctricts across the country are making community service a mandatory requirement.Maybe it is in your school. Maybe not. Some problems that arrise are that school's require that service can only be done in school or for certain organizations or topics. Also, by making it mandator, service can easily become a chore... Is this a good way to introduce service to high schools? Do you think there is a better way for schools to positively introduce service?

Community service should be

Community service should be left for people who have broken the law and need to serve it as part of their probation, next to that people who volunteer can do community service. To force a student to perform a few hours of community service in order to graduate is complete bs if you ask me, it has nothing to do with their education and is just a way of towns and villages exploiting the youth to get free laborers. If they can't get enough people to volunteer on their own to help around the town they should start paying them instead. This is probably why so many people are going to jump online and get a fake diploma instead of doing community service.

Naïve

I think it is naïve to think that everyone will care about and do community service on their own. Tasmiah is right, making it mandatory might show someone that volunteering is actually fun and worth the time.

I'm pro mandatory service.

Mandatory

I agree somewhat with tinklovers in the fact that community service should not be mandatory for graduating. However, I believe that there should a minimal requirement because it may instigate a person to see the benefits of volunteering and thus help out others.

strong negative

I personally don't have a problem with enacting a mandatory community service requirement for high schoolers, but if schools do this, they run the risk of students viewing community service as a burdensome obligation which is not the spirit of community service. The underlying purpose of volunteering is VOLUNTARY service. By requiring teenagers to do community service, their already nonchalant views towards service will only expand into annoyance and a negative attitude. They will see community service as an obligation, not something they genuinely do because they enjoy. This will inevitably show in their lack of enthusiasm while volunteering. I'd rather have a few passionate and energetic volunteers who really make a difference than many "volunteers" who are only "helping" so they can get hours to fulfill some high school requirement. In the end, these students won't be of any help anyhow, so what's the use in forcing them to do something they're not into?

Community service isn't something you can force on anyone. Your heart must be into it in order for it to be effective.

Re:Mandatory or Not?

I am not sure if community service should count as a credit. I think community service should be seen as something you give back to your community, without expecting anything in return, except for the knowledge that you are doing your part and being a responsible citizen.

Mandatory or Not?

I got tinklovers back on this one. Earning credits for community service sounds like a great idea, as long as the majority of the points is academic.

RE:Mandatory Or Not?

I personally don't have a problem with mandatory community service. While some may at first not like the community service, in due time people will realize the positive impact they are making in their community. Making it not only better for others to live in, but also themselves as well.

Mandatory or not?

I think it shouldn't be mandatory, maybe people could do services and community stuff for extra credits. You know, like high schoolers have to graduate with 22 credits. Why not let them do a community thing for an extra credit?

Mandatory or Not?

Happy Valentines Day!!!! Make sure you let everyone know how much they mean to you.

As to the mandatory community service, I dont think it should happen. While people should help their communities, it shouldnt be forced. People should have an option of doing community service or not. That was the founding base of our country.
