Should girls be forced to get Gardisil???

Cancer

There is this new drug called Gardisil. It helps prevent cervical cancer. One of the ways you get cervical cancer is from sexual contact. You might have seen tv with cool girls in them saying "I could be ONE LESS." So now some states are considering REQUIRING girls to get this vaccine. What do you think???? Should it be required like other vaccines???

It shouldn't be forced

It should not be forced, but i think girls should choose to get it.

Little sister - Gardisil

My little sister is 15 and she just started her sex life, is she too young to get this medicine ? Btw, I just bought her some amazing stuff from flowers for mothers day

No, it should not be forced.

I read in a health magazine you could get sick from it. You should wait to get married before you have sex anyway. At least know you partner and have him get a test. Sex is also a heavy emotional choice that girls often have trouble dealing with it. Don't have sex until your're married. Just don't have sex.

What if some people aren't

What if some people aren't promiscuous? Then why would they need it? It should be a choice because it's the girl's body, not the governments or the states.

No One

Should think that you get cervical cancer because your promiscuous.

Im calling out KimberlyMarie.

I Contracted the virus from RAPE.

That was very unnecessary what you said.

A response to ill informed posts

Gardasil protects against the 4 most common strands of HPV, these 4 strands cause 70% of Cervical Cancers and 90% of Genital Warts. The other strands of HPV do not cause genital warts, and have not been linked to HPV.

Gardasil is long lasting and does not require booster shots in the future.

Girls at the age of 9 should get Gardasil not because we think they are already having sex, but because the vaccine is most useful before girls begin having sex. A 9 year old girl will not become promiscuous after receiving the shot, she is not even aware of why she is getting vaccinated. Do girls receiving the Polio vaccine go out and start engaging in behavior that would put them at risk for polio? If we can safe 3700 lives that are lost every year in the U.S to Cervical Cancer, shouldn't we?

Ask Questions

I don't think you should be forced to do or take anything you don't want to. It's disgusting to give something like this to girls as young as 10 years old. And even with girls 13, 14, 145 etc. there should be a discussion and choice. Talk to your parents, do some research. Never go into a Doctors office and just let them tell you what you need and stick you with a needle. Always ask. This is YOUR BODY they are putting chemicals in.

seems questionable to me...

i personally am not sexually active, and dont plan on being until i am married....so when my doctor was practically forcing that needle into my arm...i was a little taken aback...i mean, for one thing, they say that it should be given to all girls, as young as 10!!! i think that this is insane, and plus, my doctor said that it will protect you intil you're 25...so what magically happens once someone turns 25? i dont understand that...also, i think that recommending it to girls who are so young is SUCH a bad idea because it's kind of like saying, "hey honey, now that you're vaccinated, go ahead and sleep with all the boy in the fourth grade!" this is just going to promote more promiscuous behavior, and in the end will backfire. i also read an article that said that it only protects against 4 strains of alot of other ones out there....

i'm not getting it and i encourage girls to stand up for themselves if their doctors are being too puchy about it....they need to realize that some of us have moral convictions that WILL stay with us for the rest of our lives

good vaccine

I believe that the vaccine is a good one. HPV is not something you can see and you will not be able to tell by looking at a guy or girl who has it and who does not. This drug has been out for a couple of years now so hopefully it is safe. What many are overlooking is the emotional and psychological distress that having HPV can bring. The feelings of sadness, dispair, and shame that come with having this sort of thing. HPV is like lice: it is not discriminating in who it infests. HPV can happen to anyone, anywhere, no matter how clean or dirty you are. Another fact I would like to bring up is the reports of side effects by the drug companies. Say there was a girl named Sally who broke out in hives after taking the vacccine. Her mother would totally freak out and call the drug company, 911, the local newspaper, CNN and the emergency room. The drug company would still have to report hives as a possible side effect of taking the vaccine (even though Sally's mother did not know she had a 1 lb bag of blue rasberry jolly ranchers shoved under her mattress). The doctors and hospital asked Sally what she had to eat that day but in her telling, she did not list the jolly ranchers. Because Sally's mother told her she would take away her cell phone if she caught her eating candy in her room again, Sally said nothing about this to anyone. The drug company now has to add to the list "May cause hives" under possible side effects. The real story to this is Sally is allergic to blue dye #27 and broke out in hives.

I hope this little info helps someone. It is no fun to suffer in silence, thinking there is something wrong with you. I think teenage depression may be getting more frequent. Depression can last forever if a person does not get help. Been there, done that, got over it with help.

WELL........

I personally don't think girls should be FORCED to take the vaccine, but it's not that big of a deal getting it. I mean it will most likely prevent the cancer, and it doesn't hurt much at all. I just had mine taken today and it was a breeze. I've never been fond of needles, but its really just like any old shot. All that is extra is that it burns a bit, and there is 3 steps that are required. So I'm not going to complain about it for it doesn't take much of your time to have it done, plus it will protect you from the said to be fatal cancer.

To clarrify risk/benefit of Gardasil

Gardasil was tested on over 84,000 women before it was released on to the market. The only reported side effect is localized pain at the area of injection, just like any other vaccine. No one has died from Gardasil, that comment is unfounded and purposely misleading.
HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection in America, this year 6.2 million people will be infected. HPV is the number one cause of cervical cancer, which kills 3700 Americans every year. Gardasil reduces the risk of genital warts by 90% and the risk of cervical cancer by 70%.
It should be a mandate for the following reasons: When a vaccine is mandated demand and supply go up and price goes down, insurance companies/employers/the government cover the vaccine or supply it at a reduced price. You never hear anyone complaining about how they have to save up for their tuberculosis vaccine, why, because it is mandated. The reason why it should be mandated for girls approximately 9 years of age is because it only makes sense to get the vaccine before sexual activity begins.
Mandates are not the same as, "forcing" someone to get the vaccine, parents can opt their daughters out of the mandate. If you need more information please contact me or seek another reputable source such as CDC.gov.

gardisil

you said you don't know why girls wouldn't get the vaccine...are you aware of the fact that 5 girls have died already? I guess thats 5 less, huh?!!!!
over 1,000 have been hospitalized as well....no way would I allow any girls I know to get this without knowing the dangers!

as a cervical cancer victom

i highly recommend the shot

cervical cancer was one of the hardest things ive delt with in my life

i would say yes to anyone that asked me for their advice

NOT mandatory

I don't think it's right to force the vaccine on anyone. Maybe they could "strongly reccomend" that girls get it for their own safety and well-being, but here in the US we are all about freedom and having choices. What if you are homeopathic and you refuse the vaccine? Are they going to keep you from attending school because you are morally against taking them? That's not right. I don't take medications unless I NEED to. Why pump yourself full of artifical drugs and chemicals? Has anyone noticed the occurrance of cancer has SPIKED over the past 50 years? I don't think it's in ANY WAY related to all the crap we ingest and poison our bodies with... no couldn't be... (ha!)

I think all girls should get

I think all girls should get the vaccine, wheather your sexually active or not. One of the biggest misunderstanding is that you cant get cervical cancer if your not sexually acitve. On the contrary studies are being developed that you can. Although, Im not sexually acitve I got the vaccine after my mom, a doctor thought it would be deemed neccessary. So girls GET it, it wont kill you. Also, if the states start making it mandatory, think about all the lives it will save, and as far as money goes, many states pay for patients who not financailly capable.

Reply to having the vaccine

the doctor asked if my sister and I wanted it. I do plan on waiting to have sex until after I get married. But you honestly never know what can happen before then... Weather I stupidly think I'm in love or get raped so we decided to just get it.
No I don't feel it promotes sexual behavior and the doctor said, that this vaccine shouldn't make us want to have sex because there's still other risks like pregnancy or HIV.

And I don't feel much sexier than I felt before.

they don't have to force it

especially for sexually inactive girls. if it is good enough why force it? as if taking this shot and then having unsafe sex would prevent cervical cancer.

No.

I would hate it if I were forced to - I'm not sexually active and won't be until I'm married. Not ALL of us are promiscuous and sleep around all the time.

What I think

I tend to lean towards making it mandatory, like the shots you must take for school. I think it should be one of the highly recommended shots for middle school, but be required for highschool. The benefit outweighs the, in my opinion thoughtless, argument that it would promote sex.

Thanks

I honestly have not thought of it as to encourage sexual activity. Thanks for bringing that up!

Girls should begin getting the vaccine when they're in middle school actually. The latest effective age is 24.

you got the vaccine?

so what inspired you to get it? did your mom suggest it? do you have friends who got it too? a lot of the arguments against it are that it will promote sexual behavior among young women--so do you feel a whole lot sexier now that you've had the vaccine?

probably

it depends on the age. maybe for high school a girl would have to get it the summer before.

Vaccine for men

Girls are getting HPV from someone. So I don't understand why they haven't made a vaccine for boys. Just because they don't have symptoms of HPV doesn't mean they can't give it to every girl the ever sleep with. I never understood why they are arn't teaching boys and men about this disease so that they dont give HPV to their future wives and and to mothers to their future children.

I got the vaccine and I'm

I got the vaccine and I'm not dead or anything. I guess it shouldn't be forced, but I mean I think it's sort of stupid for a parent not to want their daughter get it. Unless their daughter is a total social outcast and knows nothing about sex, there's always that chance that she could do it and get cancer. Well there's always that chance period.
Honestly I think it's a good idea and there's no problem with the vaccine.
You "could be one less" or one more.
In my opinion, if the only reason a parent doesn't want their daughter to get it is because it might promote sex, that is stupid.
Some insurances don't cover this vaccine so if it's a money problem, then yeah it's fine

Necessary but controversial

I am sure there is a bureaucratic aspect to mandatory vaccination. Without health insurance, the cost is pretty steep (approx. $360 for the entire sequence). Technically, it's not a question of whether girls should be "forced" to be vaccinated or not. This is a preventive measure against an STD that is not only beneficial to females, but to the people they interact with as well.

Of course it takes years to discover and iron out the side effects of a new treatment. Many who have already developed a disease (probably preventable) will scramble for anything that can keep them alive, even if it involves taking a drug that has not been out in the market yet. This is not to be taken in the wrong way, but you take what you can get, and you shouldn't wait until the disease gets you to start worrying. We'll get to nowhere if we, though it's desired to do so, account for the infinite possible ways someone can to react to a medication. Why do you think that a drug works or causes side effects for one person, but for the other?

Cervical cancer is not ALWAYS caused by HPV and those that carry the virus may not develop the cancer. But the vaccine decreases a female's chance of developing the cancer and genital warts, another sign of HPV.

This is really a matter of welfare. Should the government subsidize the vaccination? Of course if it's mandatory. But that would come from tax dollars, and that is not entirely agreed upon.

NO!

The brief answer to that is NO! Gardisil has been proven to be unsafe in several clinical trials yet now they want to force it on our young girls. For information on risks and dangers of vaccines visit www.thinktwice.com or www.909shot.com

Both great resources to the side of this vaccine issue we parents are NOT being told!

I believe in free choice and

I believe in free choice and do not believe girls should be FORCED to get this vaccine, however I believe information should be available to females of all ages to help them make the choice. I don't see why anyone would not get the vaccine.
