I'm new to the board and this is something I have been wanting to do for a while. I thought I'd see if anyone else was interested or had ideas on how to go about starting something so big. Animals have been my life since I was very young. We have kept fish, newts, frogs, hamsters, rabbits, ferrets, parakeets, lovebirds, dogs, cats, and even sugar gliders which I currently have. In the past few years, every animal I have adopted of fostered has been a rescue of some sort. I "adopted" a kitten from a local shelter that had a very high kill % and took her home. I introduced her to dogs, other cats, and made her into the most wonderful little kitten, then found her a home with a very responsible owner. That shelter even put down kittens, not just adult cats... it was very sad. One of my co-workers that did some volunteer work there said they walked into a back room one day there and there were 3 dead kittens and 4 dead adult cats laid out in the center of the room... urghh. I didn't want that to happen to her! But anyways, my 'dream' if you call it that, is to buy a large piece of land and create a sancturary and safe-haven for handicapped and "special needs" animals. There are many different animals who were either physically abused by owners, severely hurt by other animals, or are just born and cast aside because they have "defects" and are not 'normal'. I would love to take in these animals and provide them with a loving warm environment where they can enjoy and live out the rest of their days in happiness. I have no clue how I would go about getting into something like that yet. First, I would need my own land with which to do this. I'm living with my parents due to some financial situations and becuase of the divorce I'm about to go through. Keeping animals here is unfortunately "out of the question". No one else in my family really shares the same special bond that I have with animals...
But anyways, any advice would be greatly appreciated and maybe someone will come along who may be willing to work with me and make this happen???

Throw your dirty laundry somewhere else. We ask that you don't curse or use other inappropriate language here (if you have to think too hard about using a word, you probably shouldn't). I have also wanted to also
I have also wanted to also open up a sanctuary.
I want to open up one for unwanted and abused canines.
So I feel you. Go for it. At least try, because I bet it will be great.
I am super young, and I want to take care of canines the rest of my life, any advice??
If you need a fund raiser
If you need a fund raiser idea, I may could help you. That's how dreams start out, as an idea, then other people add to it and it becomes reality!
U r So Awesome!
I applaud that you want to do such a worthy cause! Animal abuse has gone on for too long! Even if you are not able to achieve your dream right away, don't let it go and persue it as an adult. Help where you can. I have faith in you! Now go and make your dreams come true!
:)
i have volunteered for an organization that does what you are looking to start. check them out on the web, it may give you ideas and information on how to start a sanctuary. you can do it.

Definitely
I feel exactly the way you do.
I would love to help create a safehaven for animals of any kind, to be able to steer them away from some horrible fate they would have elsewise.
It would be a crazy hard thing to do, though.
You'd need:
Money to buy a large piece of land (at least a few acres)
Money to support, feed and shelter the animals
People/volunteers to help run the place
A way to get the word out so people know about this place
Some sort of income to support it
People who know how to take care of the animals/the best way to treat them
Again, it's awesome. I've imagined doing this. I would so help you. But it would require a lot of things to get started.
Really good idea !!
woww.. that is a GREAT idea. you know, there are a lot of animals that get put to sleep because they have disabilities..and at a lot of shelters, not many of those animals actually get adopted. but that could all change with this idea. wow!! i wish i could help, but i'm not old enough to help financially, and i can't think of how to get any land, but if i do i would love to help
Wow...
That's awesome!! I wish I could do this with you, it sounds so cool. I rescue unwanted animals (my mom is getting fed up tho). I have turtles, rabbits, fish, reptiles, frogs, etc. Mom said no dogs, cats, birds, or hamsters, which are most needed to be taken. If you ever get rolling, shout out, I would help financially or in manual labor. I think thats just awesome.
