Drug Testing in Schools

Drug Abuse

According to the NY Times: In 2002 the Supreme Court ruled that schools could test students participating in extracurricular activities for drug use. For middle and high school students in about 1,000 districts across the country, students are screened for marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines and an assortment of other narcotics, and a growing number of districts are now looking to use urine tests to determine whether students have drunk alcohol, including outside school.  So basically at random students can be called to the nurses office for a urine test. What do you think? Will this help solve the problem of illicit drug use among teens or are the schools just taking it too far?

drug testing

It's a good idea - but not working/going to work. Instead of teens questioning if they should stop taking drugs, they're questioning how they can get around the tests and not get caught. We have to change their mindset first.

Any ideas?

It is a matter of ultimate

It is a matter of ultimate privacy. Checking people for drugs without any grounds for doing so? It seems utterly unfair. It's just as bad as sending every young man, upon admission in college, to a drug rehab center

We know that kids aren't innocent no more and it's our responsability to take care of them. Drug Treatment

TEACHER PERSPECTIVE

As a fairly new teacher I have come to realize the harsh reality of the worlds we live in. The reality is that kids are not so innocent. I am shocked by the things I hear kids say in the hallways when they think that no one is listening.

I think that drug testing in school is a great idea! It serves a lot of purposes. It is another reason to say no to drugs, it brings drug using teenagers to light and gets them help at an early stage, it makes schools safer etc. Young people will do anything to belong and unfortunately this includes drugs and alchohol.

Drastic time calls for drastic measures. Teenage age is drastic time and we as a society should do what ever it takes to help kids in this critical age.

hmm

So you dont think its a good idea to do testing? Nobody should be using drugs or alcohol! Well especially underage kids...

Although its obviously a

Although its obviously a difficult issue - I think that this drug testing takes things too far. While I don't want high-schoolers using drugs and alcohol, we can't let society take away all the privacies we have in this country. If it starts with this, we're on a slippery slope, and who knows what they'll take away next?!

Interesting...........But excellent idea

Very interesting.........but also a very good idea! No they arent taking it too far. After all its for the student's own good....
