The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is the only national not-for-profit organization exclusively dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research and education, and to reaching out to people with mood disorders and those affected by suicide.
We are a nonprofit funded by individuals and our primary fundraiser is the Out of the Darkness Overnight Walk. On June 9th – 10th of 2007 More than 1,700 Walkers and Crew members raised over $2.6 million to help the millions of people affected by suicide and depression.
In 2008 we will be expanding this amazing event, to two cities; New York City June 7-8th, 2008, and in Seattle June 21-22nd, 2008.
As a volunteer for THE OVERNIGHT you will be helping thousands whose lives have been touched by mood disorders or suicide. By volunteering you will be making a powerful statement that you won’t allow mood disorders and suicide to stay buried in stigma keeping people from seeking treatment, bringing depression and suicide OUT OF THE DARKNESS.
We meet on Wednesdays in our offices on Wall Street, not on Halloween however, and prepare mailings as well as go out and raise awareness of our Overnight Walk at local events.
Send me an email if you have time during which you can help, we have a very small staff and it's greatly appreciated:
