Project Description
Flamingnet Book Reviews (www.flamingnet.com) was created in 2002 by my father and me. When I was in fifth grade, I became a voracious reader. This led us to combine my reading with his hobby, computer programming. Gradually I wrote reviews on the books that I read, and my father posted these on the web. National publishers and authors of young adult literature, after seeing my reviews, began asking me to review their books. These publishers include Penguin Books, Scholastic, Random House, Simon & Schuster, Time Warner, and HarperCollins, as well as many other publishers and individual authors. As I received more books, I began to accept student reviewers from all over the United States to help with the reviews. Flamingnet is currently a growing young adult book website, and my father and I are kept very busy working with our Flamingnet online community. Additionally, I support young adult reading programs in needy libraries and other facilities with donations of books and monetary contributions generated from my web site.

Do Something! Get Involved
Flamingnet Book Reviews (www.flamingnet.com) works with young adult student reviewers from all over the United States, ranging from 5th grade to college. In order to become a Flamingnet student reviewer, students must complete an application. Upon receipt of a student's application, they are emailed a username and password. These are used to login to Flamingnet and view the books currently available for review. After a student reviewer selects a book to review from this list, the book is mailed to them. They are asked to review the book within 6 weeks. Their review is submitted online. If the review is accepted for posting on Flamingnet, the reviewer is allowed to keep the book and request another book to review.

Project Updates:
Donation Program
Flamingnet is an Associate member of Amazon.com. All books reviewed on Flamingnet are linked to Amazon.com. For every book purchased on Amazon.com through my website, I receive credit. I use this Amazon.com credit to buy books to donate to charity and to schools and libraries that do not have money to purchase books for their collection. Duplicate books received from authors and publishers, or books I decide are not appropriate to be reviewed on Flamingnet, are also donated.
Online Community Bulletin Board Program
The Flamingnet online community has a bulletin board for people to exchange ideas about young adult books. The bulletin board is arranged by topic and date of posting. Authors of reviewed books, student reviewers, and other visitors to my site are encouraged to leave messages on the bulletin board about new books, future books, or the process of writing for young adults.
Project Update (2/23/08)
I used the Plum Grant Award to help contact school libraries and tell them about my website, Flamingnet Book Reviews (www.flamingnet.com). In the past, I have sent out postcards with information about Flamingnet to many states libraries. With the $500 Plum Grant Award I had enough money to send this postcard to 1000 libraries. I chose to send these cards to school libraries in Connecticut. This was a state that I had not previously covered in past mailings. The total cost was $477.12 for printing and mailing. I used Modern Postcard (www.modernpostcard.com).
The cards were sent out during the week of 2/1/08 and arrived at the libraries the following week. I was able to track the number of new Connecticut visitors to my website during the week of 2/9/08 and immediately saw a dramatic increase in the statistics from this state. Although, I did not have any new students from Connecticut sign up as Flamingnet student reviewers, I am hopeful that over time this mailing will not only have generated more interest from Connecticut librarians but they will also encourage students from their schools to review for Flamingnet. I may need to send a second and third mailing to these same librarians to help get them more interested in Flamingnet.
Thank you again to Do Something.org for the Plum Grant Award.
