How and why to vote

Voting

I am a first time voter and am not sure how everything works, where to vote, how to vote. Does texas have a preliminary? If so when? When is the actual voting for President. I have been watching all of the canidents for I don't have a side yet. What is conservitive and liberal? People keep asking me and they get mad when I say I don't know. Politics was not something I was raised up knowing. Since going to college I have begun to listen to the conversations and have been doing research and feel I should excersice my right to vote but will not go into it lightly. Any help would be great.

Congrats on your first election, and your decision to not only vote, but to be an informed voter. I was a deputy voter registrar in TX during college. First you should make sure that you are registered to vote. You can pick up voter registration forms at public libraries or at any DPS office. Once you have registered you will receive a card in the mail that will tell you what precinct you are in which will determine your polling place (where you vote). You should visit the TX secretary of State website for more info on when the TX primary is http://www.sos.state.tx.us/elections/voter/index.shtml
Texas also has early voting options which allow you to vote at a location that is not in your precinct. Just make sure you register in enough time to participate in the primary. I believe in TX you have to register at least 30 days before an election so it is important that you find out when the primary is ASAP.

Your question about what is liberal and what is conservative is not so simple. When you look at it in terms of the two major political parties there are "liberal" and "conservative" aspects to both though the Democratic party is generally considered to be liberal and the Republican party conservative. The best way to figure out where you fall is to read both of their platforms and beliefs and see which resonates most with you. The website about.com also has a pretty good definition of both just type in the question "What is a liberal". This is the most unbiased opinion I can give especially without going into a huge speech. I hope it helps.
