The project I created, along with two sociology classmates, was called the Loco Locals Bizarre. The idea for the project was to raise community awareness to the upcoming end of oil and instill a sense of community closeness that my classmates and I believed would be important when our economy shifts from relying on oil to a new age where we use other sorts of fuels. The way it worked was we transformed our outdoor amphitheater at Fort Lewis College into a trading fair. We had been publicizing it for weeks so that people would bring things with them, only useful things though it was sort of like a huge garage sale, except everything was done through barter, there was no money involved. For example one person brought an old snowboard and bindings and got paint ball gun and DVD player. We also encouraged people who offered services to come as well, for example I had a friend who was trying to promote his massage therapy business come and offer massages as his trade for goods or other services. To get a lot of people involved we had four different bands come and play music throughout the day and we also had guest speakers to address the topics we were there to spread awareness about. Finally to make sure the whole community was involved we got donations for dozens of business's in our town, gift certificates and things like that, and we raffled them off. The event was a large success and we plan to do it again in about two months. The great thing is we can also use this approach to address any social problems we want to change because it gets everybody involved in one place at one time and provides an opportunity to spread the message.
