South Africa announced this week that it will allow the killing of elephants to reduce their growing numbers. The Environment Minister said the move is necessary to reduce environmental degradation and rising conflicts with humans. Because the daily diet of an elephant is about 660 lbs. of grass, leaves and twigs and up to 52 gallons of water, they turn woodlands to grass and stubs in a matter of years. Herds roam widely in their forage for food and drink so they are increasingly clashing with people. South Africa’s new regulations on managing elephants, effective May 1st, say killing must be through “quick and humane methods,” preferably by a single lethal shot to the brain by a marksman in a helicopter. Well what the marksman misses? How can you guarantee that the killing will be quick? And why is it that when wildlife and human civilization collide, the first option is to do something about the animal population? I mean, we're impinging on their territory too! What do you think?

Stupid
Without knowing it there already letting poachers come in and kill way to many elephants. I thiink the guy who said it was okay to kill elephant should be shot by a marksman in a chopper what an idiot.

Wrong just wrong
First of all killing isn't humane anyway and second what the heck? poor elephants. I've said this before and I'll say it again: Animals have feelings too. Just because you THINK there's too many elephants doesn't mean you have to go and kill them all. That's wrong. God put them on Earth for a reason and maybe isn't not the elephants that are increasing, but maybe it's the humans that are butting in on their lives and homes.
Hey...
I was talking to the newspaper staff in my school when I brought this up, and it sparked a discussion about this happening. Like how it's deer here, and elephants there, what happens when the world becomes over-populated? Will they just kill us off too? So I hope to write about this, hopefully it can draw attention to this horrible problem.
So wrong
How could a government pass such a horrible law?! I don't understand why they would do that. I agree with you in saying that it's horrible. Why can't we just move some of the elephants to wildlife preserves or zoos (sad but better then nothing.)
