Celebrate St. Patrick's Day with our eco-friendly tips.
Decorate it!
- Bring some Irish luck to your home or school by making decorations out of recycled materials. Try fashioning a St. Paddy’s Mobile using wire hanger and old plastic bottle caps, cds, or cardboard, and dazzle it up with green sequins.
- Make coasters out of CDs that are too scratched up to play (we all have those!) or those useless CDs you get in the mail. You can even use old jar or yogurt tub lids. Glam them up by painting a shamrock shape on them.
Give It!
- Give your friends a candy pot of gold by cutting an old soda bottle in half and decorating it with old ribbon (you know you have some left over from the holidays!). Then fill with green apple organic candy for a sweet treat that's sweet to the environment.
Create it!
- Make a flower pot out of an old aluminum can. Decorate with recycled fabric (how about last year's St. Paddy's t-shirt), fill with dirt, then plant whatever you like. You can even make a few planters to line up as a window box and plant veggies in, like a tomato plant that'll bloom in late spring. And you can gift it by decorating it ala St. Paddy’s Day theme (use that old St. Paddy's shirt!) and offering it to a friend. Now is a great time to remind people that spring is on its way!
Wear it!
- Look stylish while you support Beads for Life. Ugandan women turn colorful recycled paper into beautiful beads, which then become income, food, medicine, school fees -- and hope. You can buy colorful bracelets and necklaces, or loose beads for your own project.
- Double your Irish luck with these chunky resin bracelets that come in two shades of green. The best part is that they actually make a difference: For each bangle sold, a portion of the proceeds will go to the Natural Resource Defense Council.
Munch it!
- Have a sweet tooth? Indulge while staying green! You can get organic candy at tons of places like Whole Foods or Trader Joes, or any neighborhood natural foods store for that matter. Or buy a gift set of yummy organic lollipops in flavors like Pomegranate Pucker, Mango Tango and Roadside Rootbeer. They're so yummy you'll forget they're good for the earth!
- Make your own St. Paddy's candy with Karen’s Caring Gift kit that includes everything you need to mix up your own gummy or chocolate candy. Best of all, its all natural, organic and sustainable. Knowing you are helping the earth will only make these sweets taste better!
Cook it!
- Make organic St. Paddy’s day cookies or cake for your friends. Then give out the baked goods tied with a minnie fact sheet on little ways to go green today, or tips on how to recycle or conserve energy.
Celebrate it!
- Throw a "green-themed" St. Paddy’s Party. Serve up some organic candy and cake, show off your green decorations and give out recycled party favors. You can make bracelet cuffs fashioned from old paper towel cardboard tubes. Just cut to desired thickness, then have fun adding festive stickers, fabric, ribbon or glitter. You can even use paint or marker to personalize them.
Spread it!
- Do you know the history of St. Patrick’s day? Ireland's history is rich with Druid and Celtic traditions, which are all about honoring the Earth and respecting nature. Ask your school or place of worship if you can put up some posters with facts about Ireland and how we can honor the Earth everyday by staying green.
