Project Description

El Rincon del Niño aims to improve the quality of education of the children of elementary school N 22757 Viña Vieja in Chincha, Peru, by constructiong a library and implementing several reading programs.

The coordinating team is comprised of four Peruvian college students in Lima with extensive experience in the social service field, and myself, sophomore Swarthmore college student. Supporting our project is the peruvian Chairman of Texas-Peru Chapter of NGO Partners of the Americas, Iliana Diaz, who will provide volunteers, the construction of the library itself, and in kind donations. Iliana Shoobridge, head of the Culture and Publicity Dpmt of the US Embassy in Lima will provide almost all books and material to furnish the library once constructed. Assistant Director of Human Rights Cooperation of Ica, Peru, Celeide Garcia will provide extensive assistance in communications and logistics at the village site.

Our target population is 80 children ages from 5 to 12. The community impact will be less high school dropouts, more job opportunities for the students. We have full community parents support, strong support from local municipality, full faculty support, and we strong relationship with school principal Danton Villegas.

Our mains objectives are to:

1) Construct library sustainable financially and with local human resources (parents, faculty,etc.)

2) Implement a one hour reading program school wide

3) Increase literacy levels at school

4) Engage at least 20 students in reading (will be a prize)

I have been organizing this since February, but the dates of the actual project will be between June 20th and July 20th
