Silent Epidemic

School Dropouts

More than a million U.S. high school students – about 1.2 million to be exact -- chose dropping out over graduation in 2004, and 17 of the nation’s largest cities graduate less than 50 percent of their pupils. What's it like in your school? And what do you think schools can do to help?

Standardized Test.

Teachers are constantly under preassure to increase the test school and in some places there are tests in place which have tests in 4 and 8th and 10th grade which if they do not preform up to standards they will fail the year. These standardized tests are what the teachers focus on and we often miss our on core cirruculum information to spend a bit more time on necessary test target information or on test taking skills altogether. I feel that we need to either redesign standardized testing or get rid of it all together as all it is a handbag full of stress to students, teachers, falculty, and parents.

no

no, students should not be paid for getting good grades, unless it's from their parents. but yes, students who try hard should be rewarded, and at my school, we are, with academic letters, pins, scholarships, special recognition, etc.

students should not be BRIBED to educate themselves. students must try themselves to learn, because education is not a reward, it is a necessity for our future. students who are bribed for education will go on later in life expecting everything to come with a reward, and that is not right.

-this was really in regards to Students Should Be Paid For

What are the underlying factors?

I won't say any personal information, but I will throw it out there that I'm presently a highschool Junior, so I'm talking from immediate, hands-on experience here.
First off, my school is very small in comparison with large inner city school districts.
As in, I know just about everyone in my school, almost.
Now, we could all debate the whole 'Small school vs. Large school' issue all day long, but that's not really the point.
The point is, that no matter where you go, students are dropping out of school. My school's graduating percentage is consistantly 100%, but obviously, sadly, that's not the norm. Statistically, schools in the United States are teaching lower levels of Mathematics, Sciences, etc. in contrast with other countries, such as Japan.
What I'm saying is, students in the United States are being taught material that is getting less and less challenging, and we are getting lower and lower grades and test scores.
I'm not sure how to make it better, but we need to be concious of this serious problem.

Students should be paid for

Students should be paid for good grades but it should be secret because most people would try harder just so they can get paid. But the students who try hard to make the grade should be rewarded.
