Coming out to your family and friends is hard enough without the worry of ending up on the streets. Sadly, this is a reality that 40 percent of the 1.7 million homeless teens in America face. Even worse, these teens have a MUCH higher chance of experiencing violence on the streets and in homeless shelter systems.

Did you know…?

58 percent of homeless gay and transgender teens have been sexually assaulted. *Compared to 33 percent of straight homeless teens.

44 percent of LGBT teens have been asked by someone on the street to exchange sex for money, food, drugs, shelter, or clothes. *Compared to 26 percent of straight homeless teens.

88 percent of professional staff that work with these teens say that LGBT young people aren’t safe in group-home environments.

So if these teens aren’t safe in group-home environments, where then? On any given night in New York City there are 3,800 homeless teens (28 percent of the group identify as LGBT) – with 1,600 of them sleeping on the street. And only about 250 youth shelter beds. That number is even less since the new budget reportedly cut $7 million from the city’s Runaway and Homeless Youth Services.

Help us change this by signing and sharing our petition. We want to see a financial commitment made to employ more programs to help LGBT homeless young people, in addition to an increase in youth shelter beds. Upon reaching 3,800 signatures (the number of homeless teens in NYC) we will hand deliver this petition to Mayor Mike Bloomberg.

Dear Mayor Bloomberg,

New York City has a reputation for being one of the greatest places in the world. However, there’s a not-so-great problem that isn’t being talked about: the number of homeless LGBT teens that end up on the streets.

On any given night in NYC, there are 3,800 homeless teens – 28 percent of them are LGBT. And only 250 youth shelter beds. That number is even less since your new budget reportedly cut $7 million from the city’s Runaway and Homeless Youth Services.

We’d like you to allocate funds to employ more programs to help LGBT homeless young people and to create a larger number of youth shelter beds.

Team LGBT! I am a strong advocate for the LGBT because I believe that being gay or bisexual is no different than being black or wite or asain, you were born that way. These people should not be treated any different than any other person. We all struggle and being part of LGBT, I'm sure is even harder. I love everyone equally and it is time that we all do that.

Just because they don like the things we do, doesn't mean they are any different they are exatley the same a sus they are human beings and amazing ones at that! Just because society says its not right, doesn't mean its not! Its perfectly fine to be gay, lesbian, bi sexual or just curious! NO one sould be put on the street there not the fucked up ones society is the fucked up! We have a picture of normal and if they don't fit with our normal, then they are outcast, but that's not true! They re just like us! Every ones the same! No one different everyone is normal, and everyone is crazy, special, and loved! Theres no reason to judge! and every one should have the same rights no matter what! NOONE SHOULD BE LEFT ON THE STREETS!
