Are starlets setting a bad example for girls?

Miley’s pole dance at the Teen Choice Awards has re-sparked the debate that young stars – with even younger fan bases – are crossing the line with sexually provocative images. Are they?

Who says Miley Cyrus is a role model?
She's just a popstar... If she sold herself as a role model, then she'd be a role model...
That's just what I think.

if people are getting mad over that, they need to grow up. shes 16 and the song says shes movng her hips and dancing

Shes young thats the point she has alot of little children watching her why dance on a pole she needs to remember she may be Miley Cyrus but to young Children shes still hannah montana

When you have someone singing your songs, wearing your clothes, doing your dances, qoutes your lines, you're a role model. She needs to start acting like one.

I don't think they are role models....they could be if they wish but right now they are just celebs. The trick is engaging parents to monitor what they expose their children to. We can not expect an industry to do that job for us. If someone is sleazy why would you allow your children to watch or listen to them?

She chose to be in the public eye.

That, whether you like it or not, comes with certain responsibilities.
She needs to behave in accordance to her fan base.

She was begin miley cyrus ! not Hannah Montana she has a life of her own . as she should and she was about 4 feet away from the pole can you really call that pole dancing seriously .

It's really not Miley Cyrus's fault, but the people who O.K.'d her performance. Obviously choreography is created and set before shows and she was told (or at least allowed) to dance like this. She's 16 years old and really shouldn't be looked at as if she were a sex symbol--it's wrong. She may or may not have wanted to do this, but in any event she should not have been allowed to dance provocatively (since her audience is from about 6 years of age to maybe 14, also underage).

Although I do not see it as a bad act that should be accounted against her, she is a role model for younger girls who do not know any better, so therefore she should think twice about who is viewing her before performing those acts.

It's not as much her fault as it is the people who choreographed and approved the dance for her. We don't know if she objected to doing the pole dance or not, but if she did, it wasn't her fault.

OMG! I cannot believe that she would even agree (or her parents agreed) agreed to let her do something like that. I know my 8year old neice loves Miley, and I'll be d@#$ed if i'm gonna let her be influenced by something like that! and at the TEEN CHOICE AWARDS!! Come on people!!!!!!!!!! is this the message we are trying to send to our TEEN DAUGHTERS??? That this is ok??? I'm furious at her actions!! She is a role model because she accepted the role of it, in portraying to OUR CHILDREN!!!

OH YEAH, AND SHE IS A MINOR!!!!!!!

i think that miley should be a role model instead of all over a pole!
kids watch her tv shows everyday girls have backpacks, notebooks, necklaces etc...
and here she is dancing on a pole? what if little girls see that and they think it is alright to be like that just because HANNAH MONTANA! was doing it!

do you hear me people!

I do not get were yall think that just because shes a celeb she should be treated any different than any normal 16 year old girl & belive me most 16 year old girls are doing alott! Worse than that, she chose to be an "actress" not a role model..that was put on her she is trying to break free of the "disney star" she just wants to be a teenage girl celebs have done worse!!! Brooke sheilds posed topless at 15 jessica biel posed topless at 17 she hasnt gone that far....give her a break! & let her be miley!

you are so right!! :))

people are annoying i mean hello! she needed something to hold on to!

Miley Cyrus is a role model to girls just as much as Hannah Montana. Also, In the end she still is Hannah Montana and should behave like she is. And, No matter how far away she was from the pole, she was still dancing on it in a sexual manner. If don't think it is, think to yourself if you would do the same dance in front of your parents or grandparents.

It all depends on different factors. In Miley's case-- I would NOT call that a pole dance. And it wasn't sexually provocative. I believe that stars geared towards a younger age should behave accordingly, but it is entirely their right if they don't want to. After all, most of them are kids trying to learn life themselves. They can't be expected to be perfect.
