Is it cruel and unusual punishment to sentence a juvenile to life without the chance of parole for a non-homicide crime?

The Supreme Court will be pondering this question on Monday. Their decision will affect 109 juveniles serving life terms for non-homicide offenses across the country. You think:

I think you'll never find out if they'll change if you never give them the chance. Sure, some people will never change and some kids will never find a proper sense of morals, but sentencing them to life without parole seems a bit much, especially for non-homicide cases.

I agree with Tawnie on this one. In general though, I believe prison should focus more on rehabilitation as opposed to a punishment-only approach.

I agree with Tawnie also. How can you expect some one to change if you never give them a chance. That punishment is cruel

I really think it cruel because that one mistake when your young taking their life away for life is kind of wrong especially if they can change their ways

I agree with all of you. If you don't give a person a chance, they'll never have a chance. It's that simple.

I think that it could go either way...if they do something bad enough, then maybe they deserve to be put away...but it has to depend on what they did and to what extreme and their criminal record.

No, if you do the crime then you should be able to pay the time. That is just the way crime and punishment goes.

Think about this carefully....
Really, it all depends on what they did.

If the juvenile did not take a life then I think its unfair. If they have a chance to fix their way and try to do some good in the world then why take that chance away from them? I mean their still young and still have potential.

I do agree that if you do commit a crime you should be punished but I also believe that punishment should fit the crime instead of an immediate cruel punishment.

I think that it depends on what they did..if they killd someone and new what they was doing.. And had no remorce yes! Lock them up ther a lost soul any way..but if it was a drink driveing or sumthing..that was an accedent..and they deserve a second chance..

I think that everyone desevers a second chance!!!!*one person can make a differice*

ok so here's my thought on this. i agree that a lot of juveniles deserve a second chance, but what about if they seriously abuse someone? i don't think absolutely everyone deserves a second chance, but i do believe that most people do, it just depends on the situation they're put into, and the decisions they decide to make.

I agree with you totally. Most people do deserve a second chance but in some situations non-homicide crimes are as bad as homicides and some kids do need the life sentence.

it seems really harsh to condemn such a young person to life without a second chance, i say give them parole

its like they didnt take a life but your willing to take their's by dening them of the free world you see it has nothing to do with parole its all about the life sentence for a non-homicide crime that's totally npt right. The time you pay should fit the crime you do and a non-homicide crime does not deserve life without parole.

Only if there crime is violent and heinous should they spend the remainder of their life incarcerated.

It depends on the situation. They could have done terrible things to a person but not killed them.

An adolescant knows right from wrong. If they murder someone then they spend the rest of their lives in prison. No exceptions. Sorry.

i agree wiht katierad. i couldnt have said it better myself. but i guess we all have to accept that if kids start breaking the law and no one is there to help them, most likely as adults they will become criminals.i'm against death roll on general, so jail for life seems better, but still, it seems inhumane all the same.I think that people should focus on preventing kids from getting into gangs and violence, and stop it before it starts. also, all people are equal and deserve a second chance, but if an adult or child attempted murder or another horrible crime, then i guess they do deserve punishment, even if it might seem unfair cuz not everything is fair. sorry if this was a bit confusing.

some kids can be tried for something that would be a one time thing and they could have done something that an adult did and the adult got a lesser sentence than that of the kid. (that does happen sometimes)
