Actually we waste energy and also contamite our planet, it's that is a special day to celebrate with our family, but we should to think if that contribute with reduce of pollution in our city. I don't think that we can't use our lights in the christmas but we can reduce the of electricity that we use.
We use LEDs for our Christmas lights, which are much better for the environment than normal Chirstmas lights, and last longer. I wish they looked a bit more like the Christmas lights we used to have, though - if they would just change the shape of the bulb I would be completely happy with them.
I live in Denmark right now, and here a lot of families still put real candles on their tree - of course they only light them for a little while, on Christmas Eve. They don't leave them burning all the time, or unattended. Mostly nothing burns down...
Some towns have house-decorating contests. I get it: The lights look pretty. But really, they aren't doing anything for our planet. Why not start a new tradition: Caroling with candles? Use the $ saved on the electric bill and send it to a charity. Honestly, isn't that what the holidays are all about anyway, not competing to see who has the coolest light show?
This holiday season, we had lights on our tree, but we did not keep them on for the lengths of time that we used to. We were very conscious of the amount of energy we were using.
Also: Right now, there's a need to save $ -- so it makes sense not to go crazy with the holiday lights on another level too.
BTW, Lillian542: I wish our lights over here in the USA were labeled as LEDs or not. Maybe next year!

I see what they mean, but I don't think I'm going to reduce my Christmas lights. Instead, I'm just going to turn off my house lights that I usually keep on during the night, and basically let my Christmas lights replace them. That way, I'm using close to the same amount of electricity (I don't put up that many Christmas lights)
