How To: Have Your School Music Program Perform at School Board Meetings Regularly

Don't wait until there is a threat to the music program. After all, what better way for school board members to see and hear the value of music education than to see a performance by the very people benefiting from it.

  1. Contact your school board to make sure this is okay. Someone in the school office may be able to pinpoint the right person to get in touch with. Talk with your music teacher; he or she may be able to help arrange the performance.
  2. Make sure your fellow musicians are on board. Explain why and chances are you'll sway your clan to join in.
  3. Follow performances with comments from students about why music education is important.
  4. Before you exit, hand out a one-sheeter containing compelling facts and stats about music education.
