Stock up on food, charge your iPhone, and sit tight because Hurricane Sandy is on the way and she’s not slowing down.
The 900-mile wide hurricane grew stronger with winds reaching 85 mph and higher! The Frankenstorm is expected to make landfall Monday night between Central New Jersey and Southern Delaware. However, most of the eastern coast is expected to feel its effects, as winds are to extend up to 175 miles from the center of the storm [1]. New York City could be hit the hardest, with an 11-foot wall of water that can flood parts of lower Manhattan and subway tunnels. Power outages are expected to effect 10 million people [2].
Yikes, those predictions are scarier than the most terrifying Halloween movie marathon, but we do have some good news about the storm. Officials are making sure that everyone on the Eastern Seaboard will be safe as we ride it out. Here are evacuations and closings you should be aware of.
- Airlines canceled more than 7,200 flights and airports are expected to close down Monday afternoon.
- Many people were ordered to evacuate including 375,000 in lower Manhattan and other parts of New York City, 50,000 in Delaware, and 30,000 in Atlantic City and New Jersey.
- New York, Washington, New Jersey and Philadelphia shut down all mass transit.
- All New York, Boston, Washington, Baltimore and Philadelphia schools are closed today.
- In Washington and New Jersey, Metrorail and PATH train services were cancelled.
- All state highways will be closed at 1 pm. The Holland Tunnel and Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel [3]will close at 2pm today.
